Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

positive 90° square, single-sided, four cutting edges

The SPUN 120304 turning insert is a square, single-sided indexable insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, intended for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape S, a square with a 90° corner angle, provides a strong, well-supported cutting edge resistant to mechanical loads. The positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle creates a sharp edge with low cutting forces — the insert uses one side and provides four cutting edges. The type N design has no hole or chip breaker, so it is secured from above with a clamp. The nose radius rε 0.4 mm makes the insert suitable for precision machining and finishing at low feed rates.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — the square provides 4 corners of 90° each on one positive side of the insert.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), occasionally also cast iron.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — a small radius for finishing and precision turning, producing low radial forces.
  • The positive 11° geometry reduces cutting forces — suitable for slender shafts and lighter lathes.
  • The 90° corner angle provides a rigid, well-supported cutting edge and repeatable shoulder dimensions.
  • Type N without a hole — secured by a top clamp in holders with a pocket for a square 12 insert.

Square insert applications and cutting data selection

The SPUN 120304 insert (also written without spaces as spun120304) performs well in finish turning of shafts, bushings, and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1989 rpm. For stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed rate to limit work hardening in the layer being cut. Grade H6310 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

The square cutting insert performs well in longitudinal turning, facing, and light shoulder turning, where corner rigidity matters. As turning tool inserts mounted in holders with square pockets, SPUN series inserts complement triangular and diamond-shaped inserts in the tool selection. For rough turning at higher feed rates, select a version with a larger nose radius and reserve the SPUN 120304 insert for finishing passes and precise dimensions. Turning insert selection depends primarily on the workpiece material, depth of cut, and required surface finish. The PVD coating of grade H6310 maintains a stable cutting edge even with varying depths of cut and slightly interrupted stock.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 (PVD-coated carbide) is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select a cubic boron nitride insert (CBN). The positive, single-sided design provides four cutting edges, half as many as double-sided inserts.

Frequently asked questions about the SPUN 120304 insert

handling, clamping, and turning parameters

Four — a square has 4 corners of 90° each, and the positive, single-sided geometry (11° clearance angle) uses only one side of the insert. Once a corner is worn, simply rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.

The type N design has no hole or chip breaker, so the insert is secured with a top clamp (with a clamp) in holders with a pocket for a square 12 insert. Top clamping works well with positive geometry and finishing operations.

Mainly in the nose radius: 0.4 mm is a version for finishing and precision turning at low feed rates; larger radii (0.8 mm and above) are selected for roughing. The remaining dimensions of the SPUN 1203 family — IC 12.7 mm and thickness 3.18 mm — remain identical.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
