Rectangular WKM carbide insert – applications and design

positive, single-sided geometry with a hole and chip breaker

The LPGT 070304 turning insert is a rectangular, positive indexable insert made of WKM grade cemented carbide, intended for machining cast irons and nonferrous metal alloys. Shape L, a rectangle with 90° corners, combined with a 11° clearance angle, creates positive, single-sided geometry with two main cutting edges. Ground tolerance class G provides accurate and repeatable cutting edge positioning in the holder pocket. The countersunk hole and single-sided chip breaker control chip flow and breaking during cutting.

Key features of the WKM carbide insert

  • Positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle — reduces cutting forces and power requirements, facilitating machining of slender workpieces and cutting at shallow depths.
  • WKM cemented carbide grade — selected for cutting hard cast irons and nonferrous alloys and for use at elevated temperatures.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — the small radius promotes accurate contouring and a smooth surface at moderate feed rates.
  • Ground tolerance class G ensures tight inscribed circle and thickness tolerances, providing precise cutting edge location.
  • The countersunk hole allows the insert to be securely clamped with a clamping screw in a holder or boring bar.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 7.94 mm, thickness 3.18 mm — compatible with holders with a pocket for size 07.

Rectangular insert applications and parameter selection

The LPGT 070304 insert (also written without a space as lpgt070304) is suitable for turning and boring workpieces made of hard cast irons and nonferrous metal alloys where cutting edge stability at elevated temperatures is important. Positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle reduces cutting resistance, so the insert performs well in light and medium passes, on flexible parts, and at shallow depths of cut. The small nose radius rε 0.4 mm facilitates accurate contouring and a smooth surface at moderate feed rates.

In the LPGT 0703 family, inserts differ primarily in nose radius, which determines surface finish and the permissible feed rate. The version with a 0.4 mm radius is suitable for finishing and light turning where dimensional accuracy and surface quality take priority over material removal rate. The rectangular shape provides a long, straight main cutting edge, useful for facing, turning end faces, and machining with small stock allowances.

Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a workpiece with a diameter of 40 mm at an indicative cutting speed of Vc = 150 m/min, the result is approximately 1193 rpm. Select specific speeds and feeds according to the WKM grade data sheet, as they depend on cast iron hardness and the type of nonferrous alloy. Inserts in this family are supplied by the manufacturer Walter.

Application limitation

Grade WKM is intended for cast irons and nonferrous metals (groups ISO K and N) — for turning steel and stainless steel, select an insert grade from groups P or M. Verify full coating details and recommended speeds in the manufacturer's Walter data sheet.

Frequently asked questions about the LPGT 070304 insert

number of cutting edges, materials, and insert geometry

Two — the rectangular positive insert is single-sided, and the chip breaker and countersink are located on one side only. You use the two main corners on one rake face; once they are worn, the insert is replaced with a new one.

Grade WKM made of cemented carbide is selected for machining hard cast irons and alloys of nonferrous metals (ISO groups K and N), including use at elevated temperatures. For structural and stainless steel, select an insert grade from groups P or M.

The small radius 0.4 mm promotes finishing and accurate contouring at low feed rates. Larger radii in the LPGT family are selected for a stronger cutting edge and higher feed rates, at the expense of increased radial forces.

Clearance angle 11° (the letter P in the code) indicates positive geometry: the cutting edge enters the material more smoothly, and cutting forces and power are lower. This insert performs well on slender workpieces with low rigidity and at shallow depths of cut.
