H10 carbide indexable insert – applications and construction
single-sided 60° triangle without a hole, top clamping
The TPUN 160312 turning insert is a triangular indexable insert made of uncoated grade H10 cemented carbide, intended for finishing and semi-finishing. Shape T, an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, provides easier access to the workpiece profile during longitudinal turning and facing. The positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle means the insert is single-sided — it uses one side, providing three cutting edges. The nose radius rε 1.2 mm strengthens the corner and allows higher feed rates, while the uncoated carbide provides high hardness and excellent abrasive wear resistance. The thin body with a thickness of 3.18 mm and positive rake angle reduce cutting forces, making it easier to turn slender workpieces and gummy materials.
Key features of the H10 carbide insert
- Three cutting edges — the triangle has 3 corners on one side; the positive, single-sided geometry prevents use of the other side of the insert.
- Grade H10 – uncoated carbide — very high hardness and abrasion resistance; finishing and semi-finishing of short-chipping materials.
- Corner radius rε 1.2 mm — a strong corner that handles higher feed rates and better withstands loads during heavier turning.
- No mounting hole — the insert is secured by a top clamp and intended for indexable turning tools with a clamped insert.
- Tolerance class U (broad): IC ±0.08–0.25 mm — an economical general-purpose insert for workshop use.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 16.5 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.18 mm — a thin, positive insert.
Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert
The TPUN 160312 insert (also written without spaces as tpun160312) performs well when turning cast irons, alloy and austenitic steels, nonferrous alloys, and short-chipping nonmetallic materials. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for example, for gray cast iron at Vc = 100 m/min and a shaft diameter of 50 mm, the result is approximately 637 rpm. With no mounting hole, the insert is secured by a top clamp, making it suitable for indexable turning tools with a clamped insert. Inserts of this type are supplied by the Polish manufacturer Baildonit.
The sharp, positive cutting edge of the uncoated carbide performs well in aluminum alloys and other nonferrous metals, where a coating is unnecessary and surface finish matters. In gray cast iron, maintain moderate cutting speeds and remove fine, loose chips to protect the edge from abrasion. The larger nose radius of 1.2 mm improves cutting edge strength at the cost of slightly higher radial forces, so reduce the depth of cut when turning thin-walled workpieces. For finishing operations requiring lower surface roughness, select an insert with a smaller nose radius from the same family.
Uncoated carbide H10 cannot withstand the cutting speeds typical of coated inserts and is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select a cubic boron nitride insert (CBN).

Frequently asked questions about the TPUN 160312 insert
cutting edges, materials, clamping, and radius selection
Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive geometry (11° clearance angle) makes the insert single-sided, using only one rake face. Once a corner becomes dull, rotate the insert in its pocket to position the next cutting edge.
H10 is an uncoated carbide with high hardness and abrasion resistance, intended for finishing and semi-finishing cast irons, alloy and austenitic steels, nonferrous alloys, and short-chipping nonmetallic materials. Do not use it for hardened steels.
The TPUN insert has no center hole, so it is secured with a top clamp — using a clamping arm or lever in indexable turning tools with a clamped insert. The absence of a center screw simplifies replacement but requires a holder with a triangular pocket and a clamping mechanism.
The inserts differ only in nose radius rε: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm (as in TPUN 160312) provides the strongest corner for heavier turning and higher feed rates. The remaining dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 3.18 mm) are shared across the entire family.
