Ø5 mm wood end mill – versatile single-flute solid carbide (VHM) for CNC machining
Ø5 mm wood end mill is a versatile solid carbide (VHM) tool for everyday work on CNC machines. The 5 mm diameter is suitable where 3–4 mm end mills are too delicate and 6–8 mm end mills leave too wide a slot. The ground single-flute design from manufacturer Horn with upcut geometry ensures clean cutting and efficient chip evacuation in wood and wood-based materials.
Key benefits of the Ø5 mm single-flute end mill
- Versatile diameter – an ideal balance between detail precision and cutting productivity
- Upcut geometry provides effective cooling of the cutting zone and a clean bottom edge
- 50–60% larger flute compared with two-flute end mills – no clogging with sawdust
- Solid carbide (VHM) construction provides 10–20 times longer tool life than HSS tools
- Universal application – solid wood, MDF, plywood, plastics and acrylic
The Ø5 mm carbide wood end mill is ideal for milling slots, pockets and contours, as well as decorative work and 3D engraving. The high positive rake angle reduces cutting forces and spindle load, resulting in smoother operation and longer cutting edge life.
If you need greater cutting reach at the same diameter, choose the 5 mm Long wood end mill. This standard Ø5 mm single-flute end mill is a reliable choice for most typical CNC tasks.
Frequently asked questions
This is a versatile tool for milling slots, pockets, contours and decorative features in solid wood, MDF, plywood and plastics such as acrylic. The 5 mm diameter offers a good balance – it cuts more efficiently than 3–4 mm end mills while leaving a narrower slot than 6–8 mm end mills.
We recommend a spindle speed of 16000–20000 rpm and a feed rate of 880–1800 mm/min, depending on wood hardness. In hardwoods, reduce the feed rate and use several step-down passes to improve edge quality and protect the cutting edge.
The standard version has an overall length of 50 mm and a shorter overhang, providing greater rigidity and precision for typical work. The Long version (l1 = 100 mm) provides greater reach for milling in recesses and deeper workpieces, at the cost of slightly greater susceptibility to vibration.
