How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M14x1.5 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 11 mm, square size 9 mm.

M14x1.5 left-hand DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1.5 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M14x1.5 thread.

M14x1.5 left-hand fine-thread machine tap – HSSE for rotating components

The manufacturer offers the M14x1.5 left-hand fine-thread machine tap made from HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt for use in components rotating clockwise during normal operation. The M14x1.5 left-hand fine thread combines the self-loosening prevention of a left-hand thread with the higher strength of a fine thread. The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 374 guarantees the dimensional repeatability required in series production of mechanical components. The tool is intended for professional toolrooms handling special orders and manufacturers of rotating components.

Why choose the M14x1.5 left-hand machine tap

  • Left-hand thread direction (LH) used in components rotating clockwise, where a right-hand thread could self-loosen under the component's torque
  • Fine thread with a 1.5 mm pitch provides higher tensile strength and better resistance to self-loosening than a coarse thread while maintaining good assembly speed
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life under intensive use
  • The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 374 ensures thread accuracy and full interchangeability with left-hand fasteners used in the machinery industry
  • Compatibility with ER20 and ER25 tool holders and tapping heads with reversible rotation for cutting left-hand threads on CNC centers
  • Recommended tap drill diameter of 12.5 mm for the M14x1.5 left-hand fine thread, identical to that for a right-hand thread of the same pitch and diameter

The M14x1.5 left-hand machine tap is used in drive shafts, spindles, left bicycle pedals, and wherever a component rotates clockwise during normal operation. Combining a left-hand thread with a fine pitch provides maximum protection against self-loosening. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended to maintain optimal tool life.

Frequently asked questions

The M14x1.5 left-hand thread is used in drive shafts, spindles, left bicycle pedals, and wherever a combination of a left-hand thread and the higher strength of a fine thread is required.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M14x1.5 left-hand thread is 12.5 mm — identical to that for a right-hand thread. Thread direction does not affect the tap drill diameter.

Yes, the M14x1.5 left-hand thread requires screws and nuts with left-hand threads and a fine pitch. These components require a special order from industrial suppliers.
