K10 carbide indexable insert – applications and design

single-sided 90° square with positive geometry for nonferrous metals

The SCGT 09T308 turning insert is a single-sided, square indexable insert made of fine-grained cemented carbide in grade K10, intended for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape S, a square with a 90° corner angle, provides a strong corner and four cutting edges on one side of the insert. The positive 7° clearance angle, designated by the letter C, reduces cutting resistance and creates a sharp, smooth-cutting edge. The rε 0.8 mm corner radius combines a good surface finish with corner durability at feeds of 0.15–0.22 mm/rev. The countersunk hole and single-sided chip breaker, designated by the letter T according to ISO 1832, secure the insert and control the flow of long aluminum chips.

Key benefits of the K10 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — the square has 4 corners on one side of the insert, reducing the cost per cutting edge in finish turning.
  • Grade K10 for ISO group N — fine-grained carbide for aluminum and nonferrous metals; a sharp, often uncoated or polished edge.
  • Positive, ground geometry — the 7° clearance angle reduces built-up edge formation when cutting soft, ductile alloys.
  • The rε 0.8 mm corner radius provides a general-purpose balance between surface finish and corner strength.
  • Tolerance class G (ground) provides precise edge positioning, with an inscribed circle IC tolerance of ±0.025 mm.
  • Dimensions conform to ISO 1832: IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.97 mm — compatible with tool holders with a size 09 square pocket.

Square insert applications and cutting data selection

The SCGT 09T308 insert (also written without a space as scgt09t308) is suitable for finish turning bushings, pistons, and housings made of aluminum alloys, as well as brass and bronze components. Positive geometry with a sharp, ground edge reduces built-up edge formation, the main problem when cutting soft, ductile alloys. This produces a clean, bright machined surface, often without the need for additional grinding. The 90° square corner is more rigid than those of rhombic inserts, so it withstands vibration better when turning thin-walled parts. The insert is secured by a screw through the hole, allowing quick replacement and full use of all four corners.

Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at a cutting speed Vc = 800 m/min, the result is approximately 6366 rpm. Aluminum allows very high speeds, so it is beneficial to use the full spindle speed range and a generous coolant supply to flush chips out of the cutting zone. A constant, moderate feed and an emulsion or cutting oil protect the edge from chip adhesion. Grade K10 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade K10 is a fine-grained carbide for nonferrous metals — it is not suitable for turning steel or heat-resistant alloys, where the sharp, uncoated edge wears quickly. For steel, select an insert in a coated grade for groups ISO P or M.

Frequently asked questions about the SCGT 09T308 insert

number of cutting edges, materials, tool holder selection, and differences within the family

Four — a square has 4 corners, and the single-sided, positive geometry (7° clearance angle) allows cutting with only one side of the insert. Once a corner is worn, rotate the insert in the pocket until all four edges have been used.

Yes — grade K10 belongs to group ISO N (aluminum and nonferrous metals). The sharp, fine-grained edge reduces built-up edge formation, and high cutting speeds (in precision machining, up to 2400 m/min) produce a smooth, bright surface.

Mainly in the nose radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feeds with thin chips, while 0.8 mm is a general-purpose option with greater corner strength. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 3.97 mm) remain the same.

Tool holders and boring bars with a square pocket of size 09 (IC 9.525 mm) and a screw securing the insert through the hole. Due to its positive geometry and fine-grained, uncoated grade K10, the insert is intended for nonferrous metals — for steel, select an insert in a coated grade.
