AE9025 carbide indexable insert – applications and design
double-sided 60° triangle with a hole and chip breaker
The TNMG 160408 turning insert is a double-sided, triangular indexable insert made of grade AE9025 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape T denotes an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, which facilitates access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. The negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used, providing a total of six cutting edges. The mounting hole with a double-sided type G chip breaker according to ISO 1832 controls chip flow and breaking at medium and higher feed rates. This indexable insert is suitable for longitudinal turning, facing, and light profiling on conventional and CNC lathes.
Key benefits of the AE9025 carbide insert
- Six cutting edges — 3 corners on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
- Grade AE9025 with CVD coating — carbide for machining steel in ISO group P; the R-S geometry extends its applications to stainless steel in ISO group M.
- Corner radius rε 0.8 mm — a general-purpose option spanning finishing and roughing, without changing the insert between operations.
- Tolerance class M provides repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: edge length 16.5 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 4.76 mm — compatible with holders with a 16 triangular pocket.
- A 60° corner angle produces lower radial forces than a 80° corner, reducing vibration on slender shafts.
Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert
The TNMG 160408 insert (also written without a space as tnmg160408) is suitable for turning shafts, bushings, and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 60 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1326 rpm. For stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed rate to reduce work hardening of the layer being cut. Indexable inserts in this grade are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
For roughing steel, you can use the full depth-of-cut range — the cutting data table allows ap up to 3.5 mm at a feed rate of 0.5 mm/rev, provided the setup is sufficiently rigid. For finishing operations, reduce the feed rate to approximately 0.15 mm/rev to take advantage of the 0.8 mm corner radius and achieve a smooth surface. The double-sided design allows the insert to be flipped after the three corners on one side have worn, providing another three cutting edges and extending the time between replacements. Secure clamping in the holder and continuous coolant supply reduce built-up edge and extend cutting edge life. Regular wear checks allow the insert to be indexed or replaced in time to maintain consistent surface quality.
Grade AE9025 is not intended for hardened steels above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select the version TNMG 160408 CBN with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge.

Frequently asked questions about the TNMG 160408 insert
use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters
Six — the triangle has 3 corners per side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. Once an edge becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.
Holders with a 16 triangular pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning TTJNR/L and MTJNR/L (entering angle 93°), TTFNR/L and TTGNR/L (90°) and neutral TTENN and MTENN (60°) with shank cross sections of 20×20–32×32 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S20R–S40U with a TTUNR/L, MTUNR/L or MTQNR/L designation suffix.
Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm is selected for roughing at higher feed rates. The remaining dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical, so all versions fit the same holders.
Yes — the R-S geometry and CVD coating cover group ISO M (stainless steel) in addition to the primary group P. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous cooling: austenitic steel dissipates heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
