Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

double-sided 55° diamond with a hole and chip breaker

The DNMG 110404 turning insert is a double-sided, rhombic indexable insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape D, a rhombus with a 55° corner angle, facilitates profile turning and machining contours with varying profiles. The negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used — providing a total of four cutting edges. The corner radius rε of 0.4 mm supports precision finishing and a smooth surface finish at low feed rates. The hole with a double-sided chip breaker (type G according to ISO 1832) controls chip flow and breaking. The PVD coating increases the cutting edge's resistance to abrasive wear and helps maintain sharpness when machining ductile materials.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — 2 corners on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — general-purpose PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — the small corner chamfer supports finishing at low feed rates and with small machining allowances.
  • Tolerance class M, with an inscribed circle IC tolerance of ±0.05 mm, ensures repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert in its pocket.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: edge length 11.6 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 4.76 mm — fit holders with a 11 pocket.
  • The 55° corner angle facilitates profile turning and access to the workpiece contour without the holder colliding with the material.

Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert

The DNMG 110404 insert (also written without a space as dnmg110404) is suitable for turning shafts, bushings, and components with complex contours made of structural steels and stainless steel. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1990 rpm. For stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min and a constant feed rate to avoid work hardening of the layer being cut. Turning tool inserts in grade H6310 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

The 55° rhombus is a general-purpose shape for longitudinal turning, facing, and profiling with a single insert. Its smaller corner angle compared with square or trigon inserts provides access to undercuts and contours with varying profiles, at the cost of slightly lower cutting edge strength. During roughing, limit the depth of cut ap to approximately 1.5 mm and the feed rate to 0.25 mm/rev to avoid overloading the corner with a radius of 0.4 mm. In stainless steel, apply ample coolant to the cutting zone and replace the insert at the first signs of built-up edge, which impairs surface finish.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select the version DNMG 110404 CBN with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge.

Frequently asked questions about the DNMG 110404 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Four — the diamond has 2 corners per side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. Once an edge becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.

Holders with a 11 diamond-shaped pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning TDJNR/L (93° entering angle) and TDNNN (62.5°) with shank cross sections of 16×16–25×25 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S25S and S32T with a TD-NR/L, TDQNR/L, or TDUNR/L head.

Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing and machining small contours at low feed rates, while 0.8 mm is a general-purpose version with a stronger corner. The remaining dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, side length 11.6 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
