AE9015 carbide indexable insert – applications and design

double-sided 55° diamond with a hole and chip breaker

The DNMG 150404 turning insert is a double-sided rhombic indexable insert with a 55° corner angle, made of grade AE9015 cemented carbide. The sharp, elongated 55° tip facilitates profile turning, copy turning, and access to the workpiece contour. Negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used, providing a total of four cutting edges. CVD-coated grade AE9015 covers ISO group P10-P30, for machining steel and cast steel, including demanding thermal conditions.

The CVD coating applied to the carbide substrate forms a thermal barrier and increases abrasion resistance, allowing the edge to retain its sharpness at higher cutting speeds. Grade AE9015 is suitable for continuous and lightly interrupted turning of carbon steels, alloy steels, and cast steel. Tolerance class M ensures repeatable corner positioning after rotating the insert in the tool holder pocket. The mounting hole with a chip breaker on both sides controls chip flow and breaking, facilitating chip evacuation from the cutting zone.

Key benefits of the AE9015 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — 2 corners on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
  • Grade AE9015 with CVD coating — ISO group P10-P30: steel and cast steel, with resistance to high cutting temperatures.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — precision machining and finishing at low feeds, with low surface roughness.
  • The 55° rhombic shape facilitates profile turning and copy turning — the sharp tip reaches the workpiece contour.
  • Tolerance class M provides repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 15.5 mm, IC 12.7 mm (1/2″), thickness 4.76 mm — compatible with tool holders with a 15 pocket.

Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert

The DNMG 150404 insert (also written without a space as dnmg150404) is suitable for turning shafts, bushings, and profiled components made of structural steels and cast steel. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1591 rpm. The nose radius rε of 0.4 mm is suitable for precision machining and finishing at low feeds, ensuring low surface roughness. When semi-finishing steel, maintain a feed of approximately 0.15 mm/rev and a depth of cut up to 0.4 mm to avoid overloading the small corner. When machining cast steel, which can be nonuniform and contain hard inclusions, the stable CVD coating limits abrasive edge wear. Indexable inserts in grade AE9015 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade AE9015 covers the group ISO P10-P30 (steel and cast steel) — do not use it for hardened steels above 45 HRC, where a cubic boron nitride (CBN) insert is the appropriate choice. The radius rε 0.4 mm is a finishing radius — for roughing at feed rates above 0.3 mm/rev, choose the version DNMG 150408 with a larger corner radius.

Frequently asked questions about the DNMG 150404 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Four — the diamond has 2 usable corners of 55° on each side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. Once an edge becomes dull, simply index the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.

External turning holders with a 15 rhombic insert pocket (IC 12.7 mm): TDJNR/L (entering angle 93°), TDHNR/L (107.5°) and TDNNN (62.5°) in cross sections from 20×20 to 32×32 mm. No internal turning boring bars are specified for this insert.

Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is a finishing radius for precision machining at low feed rates, while 0.8 mm is a more versatile version that withstands higher feed rates during roughing. The remaining dimensions — IC 12.7 mm and thickness 4.76 mm — are identical.

Yes — grade AE9015 covers the group ISO P10-P30, meaning steel and cast steel, even under difficult cutting conditions. The coating CVD increases resistance to high temperatures and abrasion, allowing the edge to withstand the nonuniform structure of cast steel.
