1/4 inch is exactly 6.35 mm. Conversion factor: 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Calculation: 25.4 mm ÷ 4 = 6.35 mm.
The unified system also includes: UNF – fine threads, UNEF – extra-fine threads, UNS – special threads with nonstandard dimensions, and UN – threads with constant pitches: 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 28, or 32 threads per inch.
UNC has a coarser pitch and fewer threads than UNF. A 1/4-inch UNC thread has 20 threads per inch, while a 1/4-inch UNF thread has 28 threads per inch. Measurements are taken using thread pitch gauges.
