H6310 carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

single-sided 60° triangle with positive geometry, without a hole

The TPUN 220404 turning insert is a single-sided, triangular indexable insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. The T shape indicates an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, which facilitates access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. Positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle, indicated by the letter P, reduces cutting forces and limits tool deflection away from the material. The insert cuts on one side, providing three cutting edges, while the small corner radius rε 0.4 mm promotes a smooth surface finish in finishing operations. The letter N in the designation indicates a design without a hole or chip breaker, secured by a top clamp.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Three cutting edges — 3 corners on one side of a single-sided insert; when a corner becomes dull, simply index the insert in the pocket without changing the holder.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — general-purpose PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Positive 11° geometry — lower cutting forces and less deflection on slender workpieces prone to vibration.
  • The corner radius rε 0.4 mm is intended for finishing at low feeds — it produces a smooth surface during finishing passes.
  • Design without a hole or chip breaker (type N), secured by a top clamp — a simple construction without a central screw.
  • The 60° corner angle produces lower radial forces than a 80° corner — less vibration on long, thin shafts.

Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert

Among inserts for turning steel, TPUN 220404 (also written without a space as TPUN220404) is suitable for finishing structural steel shafts, bushings, and flanges, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1273 rpm. The positive rake angle reduces cutting resistance, making the insert suitable for machine tools with lower rigidity and power, as well as thin walls prone to vibration.

For stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed to limit work hardening of the layer being cut and premature edge wear. The absence of a hole (type N) requires a top clamp, so select a holder with a triangular pocket designed for inserts without holes. Tolerance class U is broad, so for jobs with tighter dimensional requirements, verify the edge position after each replacement. In addition to steel and stainless steel, grade H6310 is occasionally suitable for cast iron, expanding its range of typical workshop applications. Grade H6310 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

▲
Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select a cubic boron nitride (CBN) insert. The small radius rε 0.4 mm and broad tolerance class U make this insert more suitable for finishing than heavy roughing.

Frequently asked questions about the TPUN 220404 insert

design, clamping, and turning parameters

Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive, single-sided geometry (letter P) allows cutting with only one side of the insert. The insert has no hole, so it is replaced when all corners are dull.

The letter N in the designation indicates a design without a mounting hole or chip breaker. This type of insert is secured in the holder by a top clamp rather than a central screw — select a holder with a triangular pocket designed for inserts without holes.

The small radius 0.4 mm makes the insert suitable for finishing at low feeds — it provides a smooth surface and lower radial forces. Larger radii (0.8 mm for general-purpose use, 1.2 mm for roughing) are selected for heavier passes at higher feeds; the remaining dimensions within the family stay the same.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous cooling: austenitic steel dissipates heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
