Grade H8320 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

positive 60° triangle without a hole, single-sided — three cutting edges

The TPUN 160304 turning insert is a single-sided, triangular indexable insert made of grade H8320 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel, cast steel, and stainless steel. Shape T denotes an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, which facilitates access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. The positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle reduces cutting forces and power requirements — the insert uses one side, providing three cutting edges. The absence of a hole (type N according to ISO 1832) means it is secured by a top clamp, without a central screw.

Grade H8320 is a CVD-coated cemented carbide designed for harder materials and enhanced abrasion resistance at high temperatures. The CVD coating forms a thick, durable layer that protects the substrate at large chip cross sections and during interrupted contact with the material. This makes the insert suitable for high-productivity medium machining and roughing of steel and cast steel, even under heavy, unstable cutting conditions. The hard carbide core supports the cutting edge as forces and cutting zone temperatures increase.

Key advantages of the H8320 cemented carbide insert

  • Positive geometry α 11° — lower cutting forces and power consumption, beneficial on less powerful machine tools and for slender workpieces prone to deflection.
  • Grade H8320 with CVD coating — enhanced carbide for harder materials, for high-productivity medium machining and roughing of steel and cast steel under heavy cutting conditions.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — the small radius promotes precision finishing and reduces radial forces at low feed rates.
  • The 60° corner angle allows both longitudinal turning and facing without changing the holder between operations.
  • Dimensions comply with ISO 1832: edge length 16.5 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.18 mm — compatible with tool holders with a size 16 triangular pocket.
  • Tolerance class U provides a wide dimensional tolerance range — an economical solution where high cutting edge positioning repeatability is not required.

Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert

The TPUN 160304 insert (also written without spaces as tpun160304) is suitable for turning shafts, bushings, and flanges made of structural steels and cast steel, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1273 rpm. For stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed in the range of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed rate to limit work hardening of the layer being cut. Since the insert has no hole, select a holder with a size 16 triangular pocket that secures the insert with a top clamp. Grade H8320 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade H8320 is a CVD-coated carbide — despite its enhanced resistance, it does not replace cubic boron nitride inserts when turning hardened steels above 45 HRC. For hard machining, choose a version with a cutting edge made of CBN.

Frequently asked questions about the TPUN 160304 insert

number of cutting edges, clamping, corner radius, and materials

Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive, single-sided geometry (11° clearance angle) allows only one side of the insert to be used. Once one corner wears out, index the insert in its pocket to the next of the three cutting edges.

The TPUN insert has no hole (type N according to ISO 1832), so it is secured in the holder from above with a clamping arm rather than a central screw. Select a holder with a triangular pocket of size 16 (IC 9.525 mm).

The radius rε 0.4 mm is a small corner radius that supports precision finishing at low feed rates and reduces radial forces. Larger radii (0.8 or 1.2 mm) in the TPUN 1603 family are selected for heavier roughing.

Yes — the cutting data covers the stainless steel group. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous cooling: austenitic steel dissipates heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
