M5 4H V-Coil thread repair tap for cutting STI threads for M5x0.8 Helicoil-type wire thread inserts

The V-Coil M5 thread repair tap cuts an STI (Screw Thread Insert) thread for a Helicoil-type insert. The tool restores a load-bearing thread in a stripped hole without increasing the screw size. Once the insert is installed, the hole again accepts a standard M5 screw without modifying the fastener. The shank 6.3 mm with a 5 mm square drive fits hand tap wrenches, making it easier to work without a machine.

Repairing a stripped M5 thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum

Materials, tips, and limitations

The tool works in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. Threads strip most often in soft metals, while in steel the insert improves the fatigue life of the joint. The M5 size is found, for example, in bicycle accessory mountings and bottle cages, as well as equipment housings. The pilot hole is drilled to Ø5.2 mm (hole for the STI tap). Drill at the upper tolerance limit and tap with coolant to obtain a clean profile.

The M5 thread repair tap cuts an STI thread with dimensions conforming to DIN 8140-2. The tool's overall length L1 is 66 mm, and its flute length L2 is 19 mm. The tool is compatible with V-Coil inserts in lengths of 2xD, 3xD, and a correctly repaired thread carries loads comparable to or greater than the original thread.

M5 thread repair step by step

From drilling to the nominal thread

Restoring a thread in an aluminum frame or housing is faster and less expensive than replacing the entire component and involves a few steps.

Helicoil M5 tap (STI) – why it is larger than a standard tap

Compensating for the wire thickness of the thread insert

The STI thread profile remains a metric 60° triangle with a 0.8 mm pitch — only the size changes. The diameter increases by twice the insert wire thickness: D STI = 5 + 1.3 × 0.8 = 6.04 mm. This is why the tool's cutting section measures 6 mm, and neither an M6 nor an M7 tap can replace it. Class 4H is the metric equivalent of inch class 3B, also recommended for screw-locking inserts. Once the insert is installed, the bolt engages a standard class 6H thread.

Tap compatibility with the V-Coil insert

What must match before starting the repair

✓Matching size: V-Coil M5 insert with a 0.8 mm pitch.
✓Matching hole: prepare a Ø5.2 mm diameter before tapping.
✓Matching version: available M5 insert lengths: 2xD, 3xD.
▲Required inspection: depth and wall thickness of the component being repaired.

This is not a standard M5 tap

The tool prepares an oversized mounting thread for a V-Coil insert. Do not use it to cut a standard M5 thread without an insert, and do not substitute a standard tap for it when installing an insert.

Frequently asked questions

For the STI thread, use a drill bit Ø5.2 mm, rather than 4.2 mm as for a standard M5 thread. Drill the hole at the upper tolerance limit so the insert can enter freely. Chamfering the entrance at 90–120° is recommended.

The STI tap cuts a larger thread with a major diameter of approximately 6.04 mm instead of 5 mm, because it accommodates twice the 0.52 mm wire thickness. The 0.8 mm pitch and 60° angle remain the same as on a standard tap. Thanks to DIN 8140, inserts from Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil, and BaerCoil are interchangeable.

Yes — the inner edge of the wire recreates the nominal thread M5 × 0.8. The minor diameter after installation is approximately 4.13 mm, in accordance with ISO 724. A standard screw can be installed without any modifications.

Yes — the free-running insert is designed for repeated assembly and disassembly. The hard wire with a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa does not strip like a soft aluminum thread. Distributing the load across all thread turns protects the joint each time it is tightened.
