M2 4H V-Coil thread repair tap for cutting STI threads for M2x0.4 Helicoil-type wire thread inserts

The V-Coil M2 thread repair tap cuts an STI (Screw Thread Insert) thread for a Helicoil-type insert. The tool restores a load-bearing seat in a damaged hole without increasing the screw size. Once the insert is screwed in, the hole accepts a standard M2 screw again without adapters. The 2.8 mm shank with a 2.24 mm square drive fits hand tap wrenches, allowing repairs at the assembly workstation.

Repairing a stripped M2 thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum

Materials, tips, and limitations

The tool works in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. Threads strip most frequently in soft metals, and the wire insert restores a seat more durable than the original. In steel, it also improves the fatigue life of the joint. It is suitable for repairing electronics, drones, RC models, and precision instruments, among other applications where the M2 thread is standard. Prepare the hole for the STI tap with a drill bit Ø2.1 mm, keeping the hole at the upper tolerance limit, and cut the thread with coolant.

The M2 thread repair tap cuts an STI thread with dimensions in accordance with DIN 8140-2. The tool's overall length L1 is 44.5 mm, and its flute length L2 is 9.5 mm. The tool is compatible with V-Coil inserts in 2.5xD lengths, and a correctly repaired thread carries loads comparable to or greater than the original thread.

M2 thread repair step by step

From drilling to the nominal thread

Repairing with an insert is faster and less expensive than replacing the entire assembly, such as a laptop motherboard with a stripped M2 threaded hole.

Helicoil M2 tap (STI) – why it is larger than a standard tap

Compensating for the wire thickness of the thread insert

The STI tool differs from a standard M2 tap only in profile size — the 60° angle and 0.4 mm pitch remain metric. The insert wire occupies space on both sides of the profile, so the diameter is D STI = 2 + 1.3 × 0.4 = 2.52 mm; hence the nonstandard 2.5 mm cutting section, which neither an M2.5 nor an M3 tap can provide. Tolerance class 4H (equivalent to inch class 3B) is also used for screw-locking inserts, while the finished thread after insert installation is class 6H.

Tap compatibility with the V-Coil insert

What must match before starting the repair

✓Matching size: V-Coil M2 insert with a 0.4 mm pitch.
✓Matching hole: prepare a Ø2.1 mm diameter before tapping.
✓Matching version: available M2 insert lengths: 2.5xD.
▲Required inspection: depth and wall thickness of the component being repaired.

Tool exclusively for insert threads

The thread cut by this tool is larger than nominal and is intended exclusively for installing a V-Coil insert. Use a standard tap to cut a regular M2 thread — never use it to cut the seat for an insert.

Frequently asked questions

For the STI tap, drill a hole Ø2.1 mm, rather than 1.6 mm as for a standard M2 thread. Drill at the upper tolerance limit and chamfer the entrance at 90–120°.

No, because the STI thread has a nonstandard diameter 2.52 mm, which neither M2.5 nor M3 can reproduce. An incorrect thread profile prevents the insert from locking in its seat, which is why a tool with a cutting diameter of B = 2.5 mm is used.

Product code 4H indicates a close STI thread fit class, equivalent to inch class 3B used in aerospace and screw-locking inserts. After the insert is installed, the working thread achieves class 6H.

Tighten the joint with a torque screwdriver: use approximately 0.3–0.6 Nm for M2.5, and approximately 0.6–1.0 Nm for M3. A thread restored with a wire insert with a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa is harder than one cut in aluminum, so it withstands more assembly cycles.
