The V-Coil M14x1.5 thread repair tap cuts an STI (Screw Thread Insert) thread for a steel Helicoil-type insert. The tool restores a load-bearing seat in the damaged hole without increasing the bolt size or changing the spacing. Once the insert is installed, the hole again accepts a standard M14x1.5 bolt with a 1.5 mm pitch. The 12.5 mm shank with a 10 mm square drive fits standard hand tap wrenches.
Repairing stripped M14x1.5 threads in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum
Materials, tips, and limitations
The tool works in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, covering both load-bearing structures and soft housings. Threads strip most frequently in soft metals, while in steel the insert improves the fatigue life of the joint. M14x1.5 threads are found, for example, in oil pan drain plugs and fine-thread accessory mountings. Make the pilot hole with a drill bit Ø14.3 mm for the STI tap, drill at the upper tolerance limit, and tap with coolant.
The dimensions of the cut STI thread are specified by DIN 8140-2. The M14x1.5 thread repair tap has an overall length L1 of 102 mm and a flute length L2 of 32 mm, and is compatible with V-Coil inserts in lengths of 1.5xD and 2xD. A correctly installed insert restores a thread with a load capacity comparable to or greater than the original.
Repairing an M14x1.5 thread step by step
From drilling to the nominal thread
Restoring the thread with an insert is faster and less expensive than replacing the entire oil pan or housing, and installation involves a few simple steps.
Thread repair M14x1.5 with a wire insert
Hole: Ø14.3 mm
Angle: 90–120°
With coolant, 4H
Tang: break off
Screw: M14 × 1.5
In a blind hole, remove the broken-off tang before installing the screw
M14x1.5 Helicoil tap (STI) – why it is larger than a standard tap
Compensating for the wire thickness of the thread insert
The STI tool differs from a standard M14x1.5 tap only in profile size — the 60° angle and 1.5 mm pitch remain metric. The insert wire takes up space on both sides of the profile, so the diameter is D STI = 14 + 1.3 × 1.5 = 15.95 mm; hence the nonstandard 16 mm cutting section, which neither an M16 nor an M18 tap can provide. Tolerance class 4H (equivalent to inch class 3B) is also used for screw-locking inserts, while the finished thread after insert installation is class 6H.
Tap compatibility with the V-Coil insert
What must match before starting the repair
This is not a substitute for an M14x1.5 tap
The tool cuts only an oversized thread for an insert. A standard M14x1.5 bolt will not engage in a hole tapped this way without an insert, and a standard tap will not prepare the hole for an insert.
Frequently asked questions
For the STI insert, use a drill bit Ø14.3 mm, whereas a standard M14x1.5 thread requires a 12.5 mm hole. Drill at the upper tolerance limit so the insert can enter freely. Chamfer the entrance at 90–120° to help start the tap.
The STI tap cuts a larger profile with a major diameter of approximately 15.95 mm instead of 14 mm, because it accommodates twice the 0.98 mm wire thickness. The 1.5 mm pitch and 60° angle remain identical to those of a standard tap. The resulting seat accepts interchangeable Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil, and BaerCoil inserts in accordance with DIN 8140.
Designation 4H is a close-fit class for STI threads, equivalent to inch class 3B used in aerospace applications and with screw-locking inserts. It ensures that the insert is securely seated. Once the insert is installed, the finished thread meets class 6H.
M14x1.5 threads are found, among other applications, in Honda, Mazda, and Kia oil pan drain plugs and in fine-thread accessory mountings. The fine 1.5 mm pitch reduces self-loosening due to engine vibration.
