| Pre-drilled hole | Ø14.5 mm |

The V-Coil M14 thread repair tap cuts an STI (Screw Thread Insert) thread designed for a Helicoil-type insert. The tool restores a load-bearing threaded hole in a damaged component without increasing the screw size. Once the insert is installed, the hole again accepts a standard M14 screw. The 12.5 mm shank with a 10 mm square drive fits typical hand tap wrenches, making work at the assembly station easier.
Repairing a stripped M14 thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum
Materials, tips, and limitations
The tool performs well in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, covering both load-bearing structures and lightweight castings. Threads strip most often in soft metals, while in steel the insert improves the fatigue life of the joint. In machine construction, M14 is used, for example, for medium-load mountings in cast steel and cast iron housings. Drill the pilot hole with a drill bit Ø14.5 mm for the STI tap, drill at the upper tolerance limit, and tap with coolant.
The dimensions of the cut STI thread are specified by DIN 8140-2. The M14 thread repair tap has an overall length L1 of 102 mm and a flute length L2 of 32 mm and is compatible with V-Coil inserts in lengths of 2xD. A correctly installed insert provides a thread with a load capacity comparable to or greater than the original.
M14 thread repair step by step
From drilling to the nominal thread
Installing an insert is faster and less expensive than welding the housing or fitting a bushing, and the steps below guide you through the entire installation.
Thread repair M14 with a wire insert
Hole: Ø14.5 mm
Angle: 90–120°
With coolant, 4H
Tang: break off
Screw: M14 × 2
In a blind hole, remove the broken-off tang before installing the screw
Helicoil M14 tap (STI) – why it is larger than a standard tap
Compensating for the wire thickness of the thread insert
The STI tool differs from a standard M14 tap only in profile size — the 60° angle and 2 mm pitch remain metric. The insert wire occupies space on both sides of the profile, so the diameter is D STI = 14 + 1.3 × 2 = 16.6 mm; hence the nonstandard 16.6 mm cutting section, which neither an M16 nor an M18 tap can provide. Tolerance class 4H (equivalent to inch class 3B) is also used for screw-locking inserts, while the finished thread after insert installation is class 6H.
Tap compatibility with the V-Coil insert
What must match before starting the repair
This is not a standard M14 tap
The tool prepares an oversized mounting thread for a V-Coil insert. Do not use it to cut a standard M14 thread without an insert, and do not substitute a standard tap for it when installing an insert.
Frequently asked questions
For the STI tap, use a drill bit Ø14.5 mm, because the insert requires a larger hole than a standard M14 thread, for which 12 mm is sufficient. Drill at the upper tolerance limit and chamfer the hole entrance at 90–120° to help guide the tap into the hole.
No, because the STI thread has a nonstandard diameter 16.6 mm, which neither M16 nor M18 can reproduce. The tool's cutting diameter B is 16.6 mm, and only this diameter ensures that the insert locks properly. An incorrect thread prevents the insert from seating properly.
The designation 4H indicates a close-fit STI thread tolerance class, corresponding to inch thread class 3B used in aerospace and with screw-locking inserts. After the insert is installed, the finished thread meets class 6H, which is the standard for a typical M14 screw.
Yes, in the free-running version combined with threadlocker or a self-locking nut, which prevents the joint from loosening. For severe vibration, screw-locking inserts are available in the DIN 8140 form B, whose polygonal turn applies pressure to the screw along its entire length.
