| Pre-drilled hole | Ø22.5 mm |

The V-Coil M22x1.5 thread repair tap cuts an STI (Screw Thread Insert) thread into which a Helicoil-type insert is installed. The tool restores a load-bearing seat without increasing the screw size, and after the insert is installed, the hole accepts a standard M22x1.5 screw again. The 16 mm shank with a 12.5 mm square drive fits standard hand tap wrenches and T-handle tap wrenches. The 60° profile matches a standard metric thread.
Repairing stripped M22x1.5 threads in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum
Materials, tips, and limitations
The tool works in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. Threads strip most frequently in soft metals, while in steel the insert increases the fatigue life of the joint. Applications include repairing radiator fan thermal switch ports and reverse light switch ports in truck transmissions, where large sensor connections are unscrewed during every replacement. The insert restores the port thread without replacing the aluminum housing. Predrill the hole with a drill bit Ø22.5 mm at the upper tolerance limit and tap with coolant.
The M22x1.5 thread repair tap cuts an STI thread with dimensions conforming to DIN 8140-2. The tool's overall length L1 is 113 mm, and its flute length L2 is 33 mm. The tool is compatible with V-Coil inserts in lengths of 2xD, and a properly repaired thread carries loads comparable to or greater than the original thread.
Repairing an M22x1.5 thread step by step
From drilling to the nominal thread
Repairing with an insert is faster and less expensive than replacing the entire aluminum transmission housing or radiator with a damaged sensor port.
Thread repair M22x1.5 with a wire insert
Hole: Ø22.5 mm
Angle: 90–120°
With coolant, 4H
Tang: break off
Screw: M22 × 1.5
In a blind hole, remove the broken-off tang before installing the screw
M22x1.5 Helicoil tap (STI) – why it is larger than a standard tap
Compensating for the wire thickness of the thread insert
The STI thread retains the pitch P = 1.5 mm and the 60° thread angle of the ISO metric thread, but its diameter is intentionally enlarged. The increase compensates for the insert wire thickness on both sides of the profile, according to the following relationship: D STI = 22 + 1.3 × P = 22 + 1.3 × 1.5 = 23.95 mm. Therefore, the tool's cutting diameter B is 22.6 mm — a nonstandard value that neither an M24 nor an M27 tap can provide. The 4H tolerance corresponds to inch thread class 3B and is also suitable for screw-locking inserts; once the insert is installed, the finished thread achieves the standard 6H class.
Tap compatibility with the V-Coil insert
What must match before starting the repair
This is not a standard M22x1.5 tap
The tool prepares an oversized mounting thread for a V-Coil insert. Do not use it to cut a standard M22x1.5 thread without an insert, and do not substitute a standard tap for it when installing an insert.
Frequently asked questions
For the STI thread, use a drill bit Ø22.5 mm, rather than 20.5 mm as for a standard M22x1.5 thread. Drill at the upper tolerance limit so the insert fits freely. Chamfer the entrance at 90–120°.
The STI tap cuts a larger major diameter, approximately 23.95 mm instead of 22 mm, corresponding to twice the 0.98 mm wire thickness. The 1.5 mm pitch and 60° profile remain identical. DIN 8140 ensures that Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil, and BaerCoil inserts are interchangeable.
The 4H designation indicates a close STI thread fit class, equivalent to inch class 3B used in aerospace and with screw-locking inserts. The tighter thread tolerance ensures secure seating of the insert. After installation, the working thread achieves class 6H.
Yes. The free-running version can be used with threadlocker or a self-locking nut. Under severe vibration, use form B screw-locking inserts in accordance with the standard DIN 8140, in which a polygonal coil locks the screw.
