V-Coil M10x1 4H thread repair tap for cutting STI threads for Helicoil-type M10x1 wire thread inserts

The V-Coil M10x1 thread repair tap cuts an STI (Screw Thread Insert) thread for a stainless steel Helicoil-type insert. The tool restores a load-bearing threaded hole without increasing the screw size, so once the insert is installed, the hole again accepts a standard M10x1 screw. The 8 mm shank with a 6.3 mm square drive fits typical hand tap wrenches and allows the tap to be guided securely along the hole axis.

Repairing stripped M10x1 threads in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum

Materials, tips, and limitations

The tool works in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. Threads strip most often in soft metals, while in steel the insert improves the fatigue life of the joint. The M10x1 thread is found, for example, in motorcycle spark plug holes and brake line banjo bolts. The pilot hole is drilled to Ø10.3 mm for the STI tap. Drill at the upper tolerance limit and cut the thread with coolant to obtain a clean profile.

The M10x1 thread repair tap cuts an STI thread with dimensions conforming to DIN 8140-2. The tool's overall length L1 is 85 mm, and its flute length L2 is 25 mm. The tool is compatible with V-Coil inserts in lengths of 3xD, and a properly repaired thread carries loads comparable to or greater than the original thread.

Repairing an M10x1 thread step by step

From drilling to the nominal thread

Repairing with an insert is faster and less expensive than replacing the entire motorcycle cylinder head and involves a few simple steps.

M10x1 Helicoil tap (STI) – why it is larger than a standard tap

Compensating for the wire thickness of the thread insert

The STI tool differs from a standard M10x1 tap only in profile size — the 60° angle and 1 mm pitch remain metric. The insert wire takes up space on both sides of the profile, so the diameter is D STI = 10 + 1.3 × 1 = 11.3 mm; hence the nonstandard 11.3 mm cutting section, which neither an M11 nor an M12 tap can provide. Tolerance class 4H (equivalent to inch class 3B) is also used for screw-locking inserts, while the finished thread after insert installation is class 6H.

Tap compatibility with the V-Coil insert

What must match before starting the repair

✓Matching size: V-Coil M10x1 insert with a 1 mm pitch.
✓Matching hole: prepare a Ø10.3 mm diameter before tapping.
✓Matching version: available M10x1 insert lengths: 3xD.
▲Required inspection: depth and wall thickness of the component being repaired.

This is not a standard M10x1 tap

The tool prepares an oversized mounting thread for a V-Coil insert. Do not use it to cut a standard M10x1 thread without an insert, and do not substitute a standard tap for it when installing an insert.

Frequently asked questions

For the STI thread, drill a hole of Ø10.3 mm, rather than 9 mm as for a standard M10x1 thread. Drill at the upper tolerance limit so the insert enters without resistance. Chamfer the hole entrance at 90–120°.

The STI tap cuts a thread with a major diameter of approximately 11.3 mm instead of 10 mm, because it accommodates two insert wire thicknesses of 0.65 mm each. The 1 mm pitch and 60° angle remain identical to those of a standard thread. Thanks to DIN 8140, inserts from Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil, and BaerCoil are interchangeable.

The designation 4H indicates a close-fit STI thread tolerance class, corresponding to inch thread class 3B used in aerospace and with screw-locking inserts. After the insert is installed, the finished thread meets class 6H. The closer fit ensures that the insert seats securely in the hole.

Yes. Threaded holes that are frequently disassembled, such as those for spark plugs and M10x1 fittings, are a typical application for inserts. The hard stainless steel wire withstands repeated assembly without thread wear, and the material reduces galvanic corrosion in the aluminum cylinder head.
