V-Coil 3xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M5x0.8 thread

The M5x0.8 V-Coil thread repair insert made from Helicoil-type stainless steel wire restores a stripped thread without a larger screw or component replacement. When installed in a hole tapped with a thread repair tap, it creates a fully functional M5 thread for a standard screw. The 3xD version with a height of 15 mm is selected for soft materials and screws of a higher property class. The design complies with DIN 8140 form A, the free-running version.

Practical installation checks

A clean hole is essential for straightforward installation — remove chips and coolant residue. Install the insert with an installation tool, without forcing or tilting it. The top coil should sit 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the material surface. Break off the tang with a punch; always remove it from a blind hole.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The insert wire has a diamond-shaped cross section, so it works on both sides simultaneously: the outer edge engages the thread in the hole, while the inner edge forms a new thread for the screw. Before installation, the coil is slightly larger than the hole. As it is screwed in, the coils compress; when the tool is released, they expand and lock permanently in place — without adhesive. The wire has a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa — the new thread is harder and smoother than a thread cut directly into the material.

Why a standard M5 tap cannot prepare the insert hole

A pitch of 0.8 mm means a wire thickness of approx. 0.52 mm (the 0.65 × P rule).

The installation thread for the insert is therefore approx. 6.04 mm in diameter — approx. 1 mm larger than the nominal 5 mm of an M5 thread.

It can only be prepared with a tap M5 4H V-Coil after drilling Ø5.2 mm; after repair, the screw engages a standard thread M5 × 0.8.

M5 thread repair in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum

When to choose the 3xD version

The insert restores threads in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, making it suitable for various equipment bodies and housings. The version 3xD is suitable for soft materials and screws of property class 8.8 and higher, where a long thread engagement is important. A shorter insert is selected for a shallow hole in steel, and a longer insert for soft materials and screws of a high property class. Practical applications include repairing a stripped thread in an aluminum bicycle frame without using a larger screw. The load distribution means that the first thread turn carries approximately half the force — as shown in the table below.

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

Check before purchasing

✓Nominal thread: M5 with a pitch of 0.8 mm.
✓Tap: special M5 4H V-Coil thread repair tap.
✓Tap drill hole: Ø5.2 mm drill bit.
▲Depth: space for an insert 15 mm high and proper seating.

What to remember before repair

The insert requires an STI thread cut with a V-Coil system thread repair tap — a standard M5 tap cuts a smaller thread in which the insert cannot be seated. The free-running version does not lock the bolt: for joints exposed to vibration, use threadlocker or a screw-locking insert.

A correctly installed M5 3xD V-Coil thread repair insert transfers loads so that the bolt shank fails before the thread in the material. Plan the hole depth: the insert occupies 15 mm, or three thread diameters (3 × 5 mm). In series production, the same insert serves as preventive reinforcement.

Frequently asked questions

The length is selected according to the parent material and screw property class: the weaker the material and the stronger the screw, the longer the insert. In steel, cast iron, and shallow holes, 1.5xD is sufficient; in aluminum, 2xD is standard; and for screws of property class 8.8 and higher, 2.5–3xD is used. This insert is the version 3xD with a height of 15 mm.

The top coil of the insert should sit 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn below the material surface. After installation, the installation tang is broken off with a punch. In a blind hole, the broken fragment must also be removed.

Yes, insert dimensions are specified by DIN 8140 and ASME B18.29.1, making Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil, and BaerCoil interchangeable. Matching size, pitch, and length matter, not the manufacturer's brand.

Yes, the free-running insert is designed for repeated assembly and disassembly. The hard wire with a tensile strength of min. 1400 MPa does not strip like a soft thread in aluminum. Distributing the load across all thread turns protects the thread each time it is tightened.
