Triangular insert made of H6310 cemented carbide – applications and design

positive, single-sided 60° triangle with a hole and chip breaker

The TPMT 110304 turning insert is a positive, single-sided indexable insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape T denotes an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, providing easier access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal and copy turning. The positive 11° clearance angle reduces cutting forces, making this cutting insert suitable for thin walls and slender, flexible workpieces. Three corners on one side provide three cutting edges, and the rε 0.4 mm nose radius is suitable for finishing at low feed rates.

Key features of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Three cutting edges — positive, single-sided design with 3 corners; when a corner becomes dull, index the insert to the next corner without removing it from the holder.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide for steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — the small radius promotes a smooth surface and dimensional accuracy during finishing.
  • The positive 11° clearance angle reduces friction on the flank face and spindle power requirements.
  • The countersunk hole allows the insert to be secured with a clamping screw in holders with a triangular insert seat, ensuring repeatable cutting edge positioning.
  • Dimensions conform to ISO 1832: edge length 11 mm, IC 6.35 mm (1/4″), thickness 3.18 mm.

Parameter selection and typical applications

The TPMT 110304 insert (also written without a space as tpmt110304) is suitable for finishing shafts, bushings, and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 40 mm at a cutting speed of Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1989 rpm. When machining stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed of 100–260 m/min and a constant feed rate to limit work hardening of the layer being cut. Indexable inserts in grade H6310 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

The positive geometry with a countersunk mounting hole means the insert requires less spindle power than a negative counterpart, which matters on smaller lathes and automatic lathes. For roughing operations with a large machining allowance, turning inserts with a larger nose radius or a double-sided design are a better choice, since the single-sided design limits the number of available cutting edges. In finishing operations, the TPMT 110304 insert provides a smooth surface and consistent dimensions. The single-sided chip breaker curls and breaks chips, so these turning tool inserts reliably evacuate material when turning stainless steel and protect the machined surface. It is suitable for both conventional and CNC machine tools.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, choose an insert with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge CBN in the same triangular insert seat.

Frequently asked questions about the TPMT 110304 insert

number of cutting edges, positive geometry, and turning parameters

Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive, single-sided design (letter T in position 4, clearance angle 11°) allows only one side of the insert to be used. When a corner becomes dull, index the insert in its seat to the next corner without changing the holder.

The TPMT insert has a positive clearance angle and is single-sided, providing 3 cutting edges and lower cutting forces — suitable for finishing, slender workpieces, and smaller lathes. A negative insert, such as TNMG, is double-sided (6 cutting edges) and better withstands roughing, but requires more spindle power.

Only in corner radius: 0.2 mm is used for fine finishing at the lowest feed rates, 0.4 mm is a finishing version that provides a smooth surface, while 0.8 mm is selected for higher feed rates and lighter medium machining. The remaining dimensions (IC 6.35 mm, thickness 3.18 mm) are identical within this family.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 100–260 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous cooling: austenitic steel dissipates heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
