H6310 cemented carbide milling insert – applications and design
double-sided 90° square, eight edges, special X geometry
The SNMX 1206 milling insert is a square, double-sided indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, designed for milling steel and stainless steel. The S shape, a square with a 90° corner angle, provides a strong, durable corner for use in milling heads, including 45° angle milling heads. Negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used — a total of eight cutting edges. The letter X in the designation indicates special geometry according to the standard ISO 1832, with a distinctive corner chamfer of length a 2.36 mm instead of a conventional radius rε.
Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert
- Eight cutting edges — 4 corners on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
- Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide for steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
- Large insert thickness of 6.35 mm — increases cutting edge rigidity and strength during interrupted cutting in milling heads.
- The 90° square corner provides a strong, chip-resistant edge for face milling and peripheral milling.
- Double-sided geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows the insert to be rotated when dull without changing the pocket in the milling head.
- Compatible with milling heads, including 45° angle milling heads, according to the manufacturer's catalog data.
Square insert applications and cutting data selection
The SNMX 1206 insert performs well in face milling, peripheral milling, and corner machining of structural steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel components. The 90° square corner withstands the interrupted cutting and varying loads typical of milling, while the large insert thickness of 6.35 mm increases cutting edge rigidity. Writing the code without a space, snmx1206, makes it easier to search for equivalents in milling head catalogs.
Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D), where D is the milling head diameter. For a milling cutter with a diameter of 80 mm and an example cutting speed of Vc = 180 m/min, typical for carbon steel, the result is approximately 716 rpm. Calculate the feed rate per minute by multiplying the feed per tooth, the number of inserts in the milling head, and the spindle speed — remember that each insert provides eight cutting edges. H6310 grade inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
H6310 is a versatile PVD-coated cemented carbide grade covering ISO P20-P40 machining groups for steel and M20-M40 for stainless steel, as well as occasional cast iron applications. The PVD coating increases the edge's resistance to wear and heat, making it easier to maintain consistent cutting parameters over longer operating periods. For stainless steel, use a continuous coolant supply and avoid excessively low feed rates to limit work hardening of the layer being cut.
Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for machining hardened materials, choose a grade with a ceramic or CBN cutting edge. Due to the special SNMX geometry, also check that the insert fits the pocket in your milling head.
Frequently asked questions about the SNMX 1206 insert
design, tool selection, and milling parameters
Eight — a square has 4 corners per side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. When an edge becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in the milling head pocket without replacing the entire insert.
Milling heads with a square SNMX pocket, including angle milling heads 45 degrees, according to the manufacturer's catalog data. Due to the special geometry (letter X) verify the pocket type and insert size in your milling head before purchasing.
According to the standard ISO 1832 the fourth letter describes the insert design. The symbol X indicates special geometry not covered by standard designations — in this insert, it refers to a corner chamfer of length a 2.36 mm instead of a conventional corner radius rε.
Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Use a continuous coolant supply and a constant feed rate: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting too slowly, accelerating edge wear.
