Round H6310 carbide insert – applications and design
single-sided, positive geometry with a continuous cutting edge
The RCMT 1204 turning insert is a round, single-sided indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. The R shape denotes a continuous cutting edge without corners, indexed by rotating the insert in the holder pocket. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle (letter C) reduces cutting forces and facilitates light cutting of thin walls. The recessed mounting hole with a diameter d1 of 4.4 mm allows the insert to be securely clamped with a screw or lever. The insert diameter d is 12 mm and its thickness s is 4.76 mm.
Key features of the H6310 carbide round insert
- Continuous circular edge without corners — the strongest geometry among turning inserts, indexed by rotating it in the pocket, with no weakened tip.
- Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), occasionally also cast iron.
- Diameter d = 12 mm — the large, full edge radius facilitates contour turning, copy turning and smooth radius transitions.
- Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle reduces cutting resistance and promotes light cutting on thin-walled workpieces.
- Tolerance class M provides repeatable edge positioning each time the insert is indexed in the holder pocket.
- The recessed central mounting hole d1 4.4 mm ensures rigid clamping with a screw or lever without an additional washer.
Round insert applications and cutting data selection
The RCMT 1204 insert (also written without a space as rcmt1204) is suitable for contour turning, profile copying and machining rounded features and radius transitions. The continuous edge distributes the load over a longer section, allowing the insert to withstand high feed rates in roughing and leave a smooth surface. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a workpiece diameter of 60 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1061 rpm. When machining stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed to limit work hardening of the layer being cut. H6310 grade indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
Round geometry provides the strongest edge among turning insert shapes because it has no weakened corner. However, this same feature increases the length of contact between the chip and the edge, as well as radial forces, so the insert requires rigid clamping and a machine with sufficient power. The PVD-coated H6310 grade combines wear resistance with heat resistance, allowing operation at elevated cutting speeds as well. The versatile P20-P40 and M20-M40 range covers structural steels, alloy steels and austenitic stainless steels, as well as gray cast iron with appropriately selected cutting parameters. With continuous emulsion cooling, the insert maintains edge sharpness during longer passes, reducing the number of cutting edge changes in batch production.
The round insert generates high radial forces — on slender and long workpieces, limit the depth of cut and ensure rigid clamping to avoid vibration. Grade H6310 is not intended for hardened steels above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select a cubic boron nitride insert (CBN).

Frequently asked questions about the RCMT 1204 insert
indexing, turning tool selection and turning parameters
The round insert has a continuous edge without corners, so once one section is worn, it is rotated in the pocket to the next section. The number of positions depends on the depth of cut — the smaller the contact width, the more indexing positions are available. The insert is single-sided (7° positive geometry) and cuts on one side only.
Holders with a size 12 round pocket (insert diameter 12 mm): for external turning, neutral SRDCN and right-hand and left-hand SRGCR/L in shank cross sections from 20×20 to 32×32 mm. The neutral SRDCN body operates symmetrically in both directions; the R and L versions are suitable for directional turning.
The R shape is suitable for contour turning, profile copying, machining rounded features and radius transitions, and roughing at high feed rates. The continuous edge is stronger than the corner of a triangular or diamond-shaped insert, but generates higher radial forces and requires rigid clamping.
Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
