Positive square insert in K10 carbide – applications and design

single-sided 90° square with a hole, for turning nonferrous metals

The SCGT 09T304 turning insert is a positive, square indexable insert made of fine-grained carbide in grade K10, designed for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape S, a square with a 90° corner angle, provides a rigid, strong corner and four cutting edges. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle (class C) makes the insert single-sided — only one rake face is used. The sharp, often polished edge, typical of inserts with the GT and -AL suffixes, reduces built-up edge formation and leaves a smooth machined surface. The corner radius rε of 0.4 mm makes this insert suitable for finishing at low feeds.

Key benefits of the K10 carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — 4 square corners on one positive side; when a corner becomes dull, rotate the insert in the pocket to the next corner without changing the holder.
  • K10 grade for nonferrous metals — fine-grained carbide for aluminum, brass, and bronze; sharp, often polished edge, ISO N group.
  • 7° positive geometry — lower cutting forces and resistance, beneficial for thin-walled and slender workpieces prone to vibration.
  • The corner radius rε of 0.4 mm promotes low surface roughness and accurate contour reproduction in finish turning.
  • Tolerance class G (ground) ensures accurate, repeatable edge positioning after rotating the insert in the holder pocket.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 9.525 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.97 mm — compatible with holders featuring a square pocket.

Square insert applications and cutting data selection

The SCGT 09T304 insert (also written without spaces as SCGT09T304) performs well in finish turning of bushings, pistons, housings, and flanges made of aluminum alloys, as well as brass and bronze components. Positive geometry and a small corner radius reduce cutting forces, allowing thin-walled workpieces to be machined without deformation. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 600 m/min, the result is approximately 4775 rpm. Aluminum permits very high cutting speeds — the range for precision machining reaches 375–2400 m/min — so check the maximum spindle speed and holder balance. Grade K10 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Fine-grained K10 carbide combines hardness with cutting edge abrasion resistance, allowing the edge to retain its geometry for a long time when machining soft yet abrasive cast aluminum-silicon alloys. Stable operation requires ample coolant and effective chip evacuation — long, ribbon-like aluminum chips are controlled by the feed and chip breaker. These turning inserts work with holders featuring a square pocket matched to an IC of 9.525 mm; before installation, match the screw and shim to tolerance class G.

Application limitation

Grade K10 and the positive, sharp geometry are intended for nonferrous metals — not for steel or stainless steel. For turning steel, select an insert in a grade from the ISO P or M group (e.g. H6310) with a suitable chip breaker.

Frequently asked questions about the SCGT 09T304 insert

number of edges, materials, and turning parameter selection

Four — a square has 4 corners at 90° each, and the positive, single-sided geometry (7° clearance angle) allows only one rake face to be used. When a corner becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in the pocket to the next edge without changing the holder.

For aluminum and nonferrous metals — brass, bronze, and casting alloys (group ISO N). The fine-grained grade K10 with a sharp, often polished edge reduces built-up edge formation and provides a smooth surface. This is a cutting insert for finishing, not for hardened materials.

The small radius 0.4 mm makes the insert suitable for finishing: it reduces radial forces and provides low surface roughness at low feeds. Larger corner radii in the SCGT 09T3 family perform well at higher feeds and greater cutting depths, at the expense of higher forces.

It is not designed for this — grade K10 and the positive, sharp edge are intended for nonferrous metals (ISO N group). For turning steel or stainless steel, select an insert in a grade from the group ISO P or M, for example H6310, with geometry and a chip breaker matched to these materials.
