Round H6310 carbide indexable insert – applications and design
single-sided round insert with a hole and chip breaker
The RCMT 1003 turning insert is a round, single-sided indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape R is a complete circle without corners — the entire peripheral edge serves as the cutting edge. The positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle, designated by the letter C, reduces cutting resistance and facilitates smooth entry into the material. The insert uses one side, and the countersunk hole allows it to be secured with a central screw in the tool holder pocket. The round profile distributes the load over a long section of the edge, slowing edge wear during form turning and copy turning. The PVD coating of grade H6310 protects the carbide against abrasion and high temperatures, covering ISO groups P20-P40 and M20-M40. The insert diameter is 10 mm and its thickness is 3.18 mm. Tolerance class M ensures repeatable cutting edge positioning in the pocket after each indexing operation.
Key advantages of the grade H6310 round cemented carbide insert
- Round cutting edge — the absence of corners and multiple indexing positions obtained by rotating the insert in its pocket extend cutting edge life.
- Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), occasionally also cast iron.
- Positive 7° geometry — lower cutting resistance and power requirements than negative inserts.
- The countersunk hole allows secure clamping with a central screw in tool holders with a round pocket.
- Round shape designed for form turning, copy turning and profiling arcs and blend radii.
- The long contact line distributes heat and mechanical loads, allowing machining at higher feed rates.
Round insert applications and cutting data selection
The RCMT 1003 insert (also written without spaces as rcmt1003) is suitable for form turning, copy turning and radius profiling, where the round edge accurately reproduces rounded workpiece transitions. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1273 rpm. Keep the depth of cut below half the insert radius to limit radial forces and system vibration. The thin chips typical of a round insert allow higher feed rates without the risk of edge chipping. For stainless steel, operate within 50–230 m/min with a constant feed rate and continuous coolant supply to counteract work hardening of the material being cut. Once one section is worn, simply rotate the insert in its pocket to expose a fresh section of the edge. In roughing, the round insert removes substantial stock while maintaining a strong cutting edge; in finishing, it leaves a smooth surface thanks to smooth chip flow. H6310 grade indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
The round edge provides a long contact line and increased radial forces — stable operation requires a rigid machine tool and secure workpiece clamping. On slender, poorly supported shafts, limit the depth of cut to avoid vibration and workpiece deflection.

Frequently asked questions about the RCMT 1003 insert
use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters
Round insert has no distinct corners — the entire peripheral edge serves as the cutting edge. It is single-sided, so once one section is worn, rotate it slightly in its pocket to expose a fresh section of the edge, obtaining several working positions on one side.
External turning tool holders with a round pocket: SRDCN in a neutral version and SRGCR/L in right-hand and left-hand versions, with cross sections from 16×16 to 32×32 mm. The choice of right-hand or left-hand version depends on the feed direction and access to the workpiece contour.
For form turning, copy turning and profiling arcs and blend radii — the round edge accurately reproduces rounded transitions. The long contact line also allows higher feed rates, making the insert suitable for rough profiling on rigid machine tools.
Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
