Round H6310 cemented carbide insert – applications and design

single-sided positive insert with a full circumferential edge

The RCMT 0602 turning insert is a round, single-sided indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape R denotes a full circumferential edge without corners — the entire contact arc cuts, providing the strongest edge of all insert shapes. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle (letter C) reduces cutting resistance and promotes smooth entry into the material. The insert is single-sided: it cuts with the upper rake face with a chip breaker, while the countersunk hole allows screw clamping in the holder pocket. The round edge can be indexed to several positions, moving the worn section out of the cutting zone.

Key benefits of the round H6310 carbide insert

  • Peripheral edge without corners — the strongest edge of all insert shapes, resistant to impact loads during roughing and interrupted machining.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — general-purpose PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Indexing to several positions — once a section is worn, simply rotate the insert in its pocket and cut with a fresh section of the circle.
  • Positive 7° geometry (letter C) reduces cutting resistance and power consumption compared with negative inserts.
  • The countersunk hole allows secure screw clamping in holders with a round pocket.
  • Diameter d 6 mm and thickness s 2.38 mm conform to ISO 1832 — compatible with size 06 SRDCN and SRGCR holders.

Round insert applications and cutting data selection

The RCMT 0602 insert (also written without spaces as rcmt0602) is suitable for profiling, turning radii and contoured surfaces, and roughing with large stock allowances. The round profile distributes the load over a long arc, so at the same depth of cut, chip thickness is lower and the edge runs cooler and lasts longer. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1273 rpm. For stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed to avoid work hardening of the layer being cut. H6310 grade indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

H6310 is a versatile PVD-coated carbide grade covering ISO groups P (P20-P40) and M (M20-M40); it is also suitable for occasional cast iron machining. The PVD coating increases heat resistance and limits built-up edge when turning ductile materials. The depth of cut for a round insert is selected according to its diameter — the greater the depth, the fewer indexing positions are available, so finishing at a shallow depth allows more edge sections to be used. Tolerance class M ensures repeatable edge positioning after rotating the insert in its pocket, reducing adjustments when changing the cutting edge.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, choose a round insert with a cubic boron nitride edge (CBN). The round profile also generates high radial forces, so rigid clamping of the workpiece and holder is required.

Frequently asked questions about the RCMT 0602 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

A round insert has no distinct corners — it cuts with a continuous circumferential edge, which is indexed to several positions by rotating the insert in its pocket once a section is worn. It is single-sided (positive geometry, 7° clearance angle), so only the upper rake face is used. The number of available positions depends on the depth of cut: the shallower the cut, the more fresh edge sections are available.

External turning holders with a size 06 round pocket: SRDCN in a neutral version and SRGCR/L in right-hand and left-hand versions, with cross sections of 16×16, 20×20, and 25×25 mm. The full list of suitable tools is available in the "Compatible turning tools" section above.

For profiling, turning radii and contoured surfaces, and roughing with large stock allowances. The round edge is the strongest of all insert shapes and withstands interrupted machining well. However, high radial forces require rigid clamping — on slender workpieces, limit the depth of cut to avoid vibration.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
