H8320 cemented carbide insert – design and applications

rectangular 85°; PDER FM are manufacturer codes requiring the product data sheet

The APKT 160408 milling insert is a positive indexable insert made of cemented carbide in grade H8320, designed for milling structural steels and stainless steels. Shape A, a rectangle with an angle of eighty-five degrees, provides two cutting edges per insert. The positive clearance angle of eleven degrees reduces cutting resistance and spindle load. The insert is installed in milling heads and indexable milling cutters with an AP16 pocket, where it is used for machining ninety-degree shoulders, face milling and peripheral milling. Grade H8320 is a harder, more wear-resistant carbide than the general-purpose H6310, with a TiAlN coating applied by PVD, or physical vapor deposition.

Key advantages of the H8320 carbide insert

  • Higher abrasive wear resistance — the harder H8320 grade retains edge sharpness longer than H6310 when machining at high cutting speeds.
  • Thermal stability of the PVD TiAlN coating — reduces crater wear and allows operation at higher temperatures in the cutting zone.
  • Two cutting edges — the 85° rectangle provides 2 working corners; when a corner becomes dull, index the insert in the pocket without replacing the holder.
  • Low cutting resistance results from the basic positive APKT geometry; the properties of the PDER FM codes require the product data sheet.
  • Universal AP16 mounting — fits indexable milling cutters, ST90 end mills and TK90 milling heads without reconfiguring the holder.
  • Tolerance class K — precision-ground thickness of ±0.025 mm ensures uniform cutting edge height in the milling head.

Applications and milling data selection

The harder H8320 grade performs best under stable conditions: with rigid workpiece and tool clamping and continuous contact between the cutting edge and the material. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000 × Vc / (π × D). For a milling head diameter of 50 mm at a cutting speed of 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1273 rpm. With a feed per tooth fz of 0.15 mm and five cutting edges, the feed rate Vf = n × fz × z is approximately 955 mm/min. Treat these values as a starting point and verify them against the process data sheet for the specific milling head.

The TiAlN coating reduces crater wear and allows operation at higher temperatures in the cutting zone, so the carbide insert retains its sharpness longer than softer grades. PDER FM are manufacturer geometry codes; their properties require the product data sheet. For austenitic stainless steel, maintain a constant feed and continuous cooling to limit work hardening of the layer being cut. Indexable inserts in grade H8320 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

▲
Application limitation

The harder grade H8320 has lower impact toughness than the general-purpose grade H6310. For interrupted milling, vibration or unstable clamping, select a tougher grade to avoid edge chipping.

Frequently asked questions about the APKT 160408 insert

materials, cutter selection and grade differences

H8320 is a harder carbide with higher abrasive wear resistance — for higher speeds and harder steels. H6310 has greater impact toughness — it handles interrupted milling, vibration and unstable clamping better. Both grades cover groups ISO P and ISO M.

Two — a rectangle with an angle of 85° provides 2 working corners; the geometry is positive and single-sided. When one corner becomes dull, index the insert to the second corner.

They differ in tolerance class. APKT has class K with precision-ground thickness ±0.025 mm, ensuring that the inserts in the milling head cut at the same height. APMT has class M (±0.05–0.13 mm), costs less and is sufficient for rough milling.

Indexable milling cutters and milling heads with a pocket AP16: milling heads ST90 (25–40 mm) for shoulders and TK90 (40–200 mm) for face milling.
