MMZb outside micrometer – construction and applications

Applications for an instrument with this measuring range

Outside micrometer 125–150 mm is an analog instrument with a resolution of 0.01 mm for checking medium-sized external dimensions. The bow-shaped frame (designation MMZb) has a larger opening, allowing the instrument to accommodate workpieces that cannot be measured with a basic-range micrometer. The micrometer screw with a pitch of 0.5 mm provides 50 divisions of 0.01 mm per thimble revolution.

The cemented carbide measuring tips maintain a flatness of 0.006 mm even under heavy use. The ratchet maintains a measuring force of 5–10 N, so the result does not depend on the operator's hand force. The spindle lock holds the reading while it is read. DIN 863 defines the accuracy of micrometers in this class; with this frame opening, frame rigidity is also important to limit deflection under measuring force.

Typical applications:

  • measuring the diameters of shafts, sleeves, and bearing journals in the 125–150 mm range,
  • checking dimensions after turning and grinding before assembling mating parts,
  • measuring the thickness of housings, flanges, and welded components,
  • in-process and acceptance inspection in machining departments.

The result consists of two readings. Whole and half millimeters are read on the sleeve — the whole-millimeter marks are below the reference line, and the 0.5 mm marks are above it. Hundredths of a millimeter are read on the thimble at the reference line. In the illustrated example, the thimble edge has passed the 37.5 mark, and the reference line indicates division 32, giving a result of 137.82 mm.

Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm per meter for a temperature change of 1°C. A workpiece with a diameter of 150 mm that is 5°C warmer than the instrument is approximately 0.009 mm larger. The workpiece and micrometer should therefore be at the same temperature, preferably close to 20°C.

Do not tighten the spindle beyond the ratchet's slipping point

Excessive force distorts the result and can permanently deform the measuring faces. Turn only the ratchet knob until it starts to slip, then hold the reading with the spindle lock.

Micrometer precision in figures

Parameters relevant to workshop tolerances

0.006 mm
Measuring face flatness
Carbide tips maintain their flatness through years of daily workshop use.
50 divisions
One thimble revolution = 0.5 mm
The micrometer screw pitch divided into 50 divisions gives a reading of 0.01 mm per division.
5–10 N
Constant ratchet force
The ratchet slips when the measuring force is reached — the result does not depend on the operator's hand force.

Set contents and zero setting

Preparing for the first measurement

Included
Adjusting wrench
For adjusting the sleeve when setting zero on the setting standard.
Included
Setting standard 125 mm
Length standard for setting the zero point before the first measurement.

Before measurement, set the instrument's zero using the included 125 mm setting standard: close the tips onto the standard using the ratchet and check that the scale reads exactly 125.00 mm. Correct any deviation by rotating the sleeve with the adjusting wrench.

Measuring with a micrometer step by step

Procedure for repeatable results

Four steps to a repeatable result

1 Set zero on the standard

standard: 125 mm

2 Close using the ratchet

force: 5–10 N

3 Lock the spindle

✓ Read the result

resolution: 0.01 mm

Full reading: sleeve and thimble readings plus the full hundreds of millimeters in the range (100 mm).

The 125–150 mm outside micrometer combines a simple, reliable analog design with a resolution of 0.01 mm. Carbide measuring tips, constant ratchet force, and a spindle lock ensure repeatable results over years of use. It is essential equipment for quality control stations wherever outside diameter measurement must be more reliable than with a caliper.

Frequently asked questions

Add the sleeve reading (whole and half millimeters) to the thimble reading (hundredths of a millimeter). Remember to add the full hundreds of millimeters for the range: in the illustrated example, 100 + 37.50 + 0.32 = 137.82 mm.

Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm/m for every 1°C. A workpiece a few degrees warmer than the instrument is larger by a few hundredths of a millimeter, making a 0.01 mm reading meaningless. Measure after the temperatures have equalized, preferably at approximately 20°C.

The set includes an adjustment wrench for adjusting the sleeve and a 125 mm setting standard for setting the zero point. Store the instrument with the measuring faces slightly apart.
