MMZb outside micrometer – construction and applications
Applications for an instrument with this measuring range
Outside micrometer 900–1000 mm is an analog instrument with a readability of 0.01 mm designed for large workpieces. The frame opening of over 900 mm accommodates large shafts, rolls, and housings, while the 100 mm scale range reduces the number of instruments needed in the department. The micrometer screw has a pitch of 0.5 mm, providing 50 divisions of 0.01 mm per thimble revolution.
The cemented carbide measuring faces maintain a flatness of 0.006 mm. The ratchet limits the force to 5–10 N — with such a large frame, constant contact force is essential for repeatability, because excessive force bends the frame and distorts the result by a few hundredths of a millimeter. The spindle lock allows the instrument to be removed from the workpiece without losing the reading. At this size, measurements are best taken with the instrument supported or with assistance from another person.
The instrument is manufactured by Japan's Mitutoyo — a world leader in the production of measuring tools and metrology equipment.
Typical applications:
- measuring large drive shafts, rolls, and axles within the 900–1000 mm range,
- inspecting journals for large bearings before reconditioning and assembly,
- acceptance measurements of components for heavy machinery and power generation equipment,
- use with support, on a stand, or with assistance from a second operator.
How to read the measurement
Sleeve and thimble scales step by step
The result consists of two readings. Whole and half millimeters are read on the sleeve — the whole-millimeter marks are below the reference line, and the 0.5 mm marks are above it. Hundredths of a millimeter are read on the thimble at the reference line. In the illustrated example, the thimble edge has passed the 12.5 mark, and the reference line indicates division 32, giving a result of 912.82 mm.
Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm per meter for a temperature change of 1°C. A workpiece with a diameter of 1000 mm that is 5°C warmer than the instrument is approximately 0.058 mm larger. The workpiece and micrometer should therefore be at the same temperature, preferably close to 20°C.
Do not tighten the spindle beyond the ratchet's slipping point
Excessive force distorts the result and can permanently deform the measuring faces. Turn only the ratchet knob until it starts to slip, then hold the reading with the spindle lock.

Preparing for the first measurement
Before measurement, set the instrument's zero using the included 900 mm setting standard: close the tips onto the standard using the ratchet and check that the scale reads exactly 900.00 mm. Correct any deviation by rotating the sleeve with the adjusting wrench.

The 900–1000 mm outside micrometer combines a simple, reliable analog design with a resolution of 0.01 mm. Carbide measuring tips, constant ratchet force, and a spindle lock ensure repeatable results over years of use. It is essential equipment for quality control stations wherever outside diameter measurement must be more reliable than with a caliper.
Frequently asked questions
The ratchet limits the force to 5–10 N and slips when this force is reached. Every measurement is therefore made with the same force, regardless of the operator's hand force — a requirement for repeatability at a resolution of 0.01 mm.
Cemented carbide is many times more wear-resistant than tool steel, so a flatness of 0.006 mm is maintained for years. The condition of the faces should be checked periodically when setting the instrument's zero.
After use, clean the measuring faces and leave the tips slightly apart to prevent them from sticking together as temperatures change. Do not tighten the spindle beyond the ratchet's slipping point, and protect the instrument from falls — after an impact, it must be checked against a standard.
