MMZb outside micrometer – construction and applications
Applications for an instrument with this measuring range
Outside micrometer 50–75 mm is an analog measuring instrument with a resolution of 0.01 mm. It measures diameters and thicknesses where a caliper is no longer sufficient. The rigid bow-shaped frame (hence the MMZb designation) maintains stable measuring face spacing, while the micrometer screw with a pitch of 0.5 mm converts thimble rotation into precise spindle travel.
The measuring faces are made of cemented carbide, which resists wear during daily workshop use. The ratchet limits the measuring force to 5–10 N, ensuring that every measurement is made with the same force. The reading can be held with the spindle lock and read comfortably after removing the instrument from the workpiece. DIN 863 specifies the accuracy requirements for micrometers in this class.
Typical applications:
- measuring the diameters of shafts, pins, sleeves, and wires in the 50–75 mm range,
- checking the thickness of sheet metal, walls, and flat bars to an accuracy of 0.01 mm,
- checking dimensions after grinding and finish turning,
- in-process inspection at the machine tool and at the quality control station.
How to read the measurement
Sleeve and thimble scales step by step
The result consists of two readings. Whole and half millimeters are read on the sleeve — the whole-millimeter marks are below the reference line, and the 0.5 mm marks are above it. Hundredths of a millimeter are read on the thimble at the reference line. In the illustrated example, the thimble edge has passed the 62.5 mark, and the reference line indicates division 32, giving a result of 62.82 mm.
Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm per meter for a temperature change of 1°C. A workpiece with a diameter of 75 mm that is 5°C warmer than the instrument is approximately 0.004 mm larger. The workpiece and micrometer should therefore be at the same temperature, preferably close to 20°C.
Do not tighten the spindle beyond the ratchet's slipping point
Excessive force distorts the result and can permanently deform the measuring faces. Turn only the ratchet knob until it starts to slip, then hold the reading with the spindle lock.

Preparing for the first measurement
Before measurement, set the instrument's zero using the included 50 mm setting standard: close the tips onto the standard using the ratchet and check that the scale reads exactly 50.00 mm. Correct any deviation by rotating the sleeve with the adjusting wrench.
Measuring with a micrometer step by step
Procedure for repeatable results
Four steps to a repeatable result
standard: 50 mm
force: 5–10 N
lock reading
resolution: 0.01 mm
Full reading: sleeve reading plus thimble reading.
The 50–75 mm outside micrometer combines a simple, reliable analog design with a resolution of 0.01 mm. Carbide measuring tips, constant ratchet force, and a spindle lock ensure repeatable results over years of use. It is essential equipment for quality control stations wherever outside diameter measurement must be more reliable than with a caliper.
Frequently asked questions
Add the sleeve reading (whole and half millimeters) to the thimble reading (hundredths of a millimeter). The sleeve for this range is numbered from 50 mm, so it indicates the dimension directly: in the illustrated example, 62.50 + 0.32 = 62.82 mm.
Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm/m for every 1°C. A workpiece a few degrees warmer than the instrument is larger by a few hundredths of a millimeter, making a 0.01 mm reading meaningless. Measure after the temperatures have equalized, preferably at approximately 20°C.
The set includes an adjustment wrench for adjusting the sleeve and a 50 mm setting standard for setting the zero point. Store the instrument with the measuring faces slightly apart.
