V-Coil 2xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M14x1.5 thread

The V-Coil M14x1.5 thread repair insert is a Helicoil-type spring element made from stainless steel wire. Installed in a hole tapped with a thread repair tap, it restores a fully functional M14x1.5 thread for a standard screw. It requires neither a larger screw nor replacement of the entire part. The 2xD variant, 28 mm high, is used for soft materials and stronger screws. The design complies with DIN 8140, form A (free-running).

Practical installation checks

Before installation, clean chips and coolant residue out of the hole. Screw in the insert with an installation tool, keeping it straight and using no force. A properly seated insert sits 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the surface. Finally, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so that it does not obstruct the screw.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The insert wire has a diamond-shaped cross section, so it works on both sides simultaneously: the outer edge engages the thread in the hole, while the inner edge forms a new thread for the screw. Before installation, the coil is slightly larger than the hole. As it is screwed in, the coils compress; when the tool is released, they expand and lock permanently in place — without adhesive. The wire has a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa — the new thread is harder and smoother than a thread cut directly into the material.

Why an STI tap is required instead of a standard M14x1.5 tap

The wire thickness is determined by the thread pitch: 0.65 × 1.5 mm ≈ 0.98 mm.

The thread for the insert is enlarged to accommodate the wire on both sides of the profile — its diameter is approx. 15.95 mm compared with 14 mm for a standard M14x1.5 thread.

It can only be cut with a thread repair tap M14x1.5 4H V-Coil in a hole drilled to Ø14.3 mm; after the insert is installed, the hole returns to the nominal thread M14 × 1.5.

M14x1.5 thread repair in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum

When to choose the 2xD version

The insert restores an M14x1.5 thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum, as well as magnesium and plastics. The hardness of the parent material determines the insert length. The 2xD variant is suitable for aluminum and screws of property class 8.8 or higher. The shorter 1.5xD version is used for steel and shallow holes, and a longer version for soft materials. Applications for the M14x1.5 thread include oil pan drain plugs. After installation, the first thread turn carries approximately half the load, as shown in the load distribution table.

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

V-Coil system requirements

Installing the insert requires an STI thread — it can only be cut with an M14x1.5 4H V-Coil thread repair tap. The free-running insert allows the screw to be screwed in and out freely; where severe vibration occurs, add threadlocker or choose a screw-locking version.

After installation of the V-Coil M14x1.5 2xD thread repair insert, the screw determines the joint's load limit, rather than the thread in the part. The hole must accommodate the 28 mm insert (2 × 14 mm) along with the proper recess below the surface. In addition to repairs, the insert is suitable for reinforcing threads during manufacturing.

Frequently asked questions

The length is selected according to the parent material and screw property class: the weaker the material and the stronger the screw, the longer the insert. The 1.5xD version is suitable for steel, cast iron and shallow holes, 2xD is standard for aluminum, and 2.5–3xD is for soft materials and screws of property class 8.8+. The insert shown is the variant 2×D with a height of 28 mm.

The top coil of the insert should sit 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn below the material surface. After screwing it in, break off the tang with a punch. In a blind hole, remove the broken piece before installing the screw.

Yes, insert dimensions are specified by DIN 8140 and ASME B18.29.1, so Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil and BaerCoil brands are interchangeable. The insert's size, pitch and length matter, not the manufacturer.

Applications for the M14x1.5 thread include oil pan drain plugs in Honda, Mazda and Kia vehicles, as well as fine-thread accessory mountings. The fine pitch of 1.5 mm reduces loosening under engine vibration.
