Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction
single-sided 80° diamond with a hole and chip breaker
The CCMT 060202 turning insert is a single-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, intended for finishing and semi-finishing steel and stainless steel. Shape C, a diamond with a 80° corner angle, combines a rigid, strong corner with good access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle reduces cutting forces and flank friction, allowing the insert to perform reliably on slender workpieces and with small stock allowances. Two 80° corners on one working side provide two cutting edges. The small nose radius rε 0.2 mm ensures low surface roughness at finishing feed rates.
Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert
- Two cutting edges — 2 corners on one working side of the insert; positive geometry prevents use of the other side.
- Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), occasionally also cast iron.
- Corner radius rε 0.2 mm — finishing version for low surface roughness at low feed rates and with small stock allowances.
- The positive clearance angle of 7° reduces cutting forces — less vibration when turning thin shafts and sleeves.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 6.35 mm, IC 6.35 mm (1/4″), thickness 2.38 mm — compatible with holders with a 06 pocket.
- The countersunk hole secured with a centering screw ensures repeatable insert seating in the pocket after each indexing.
Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert
The CCMT 060202 insert (also written without a space as ccmt060202) is suitable for finishing and machining to fit shafts, pins, sleeves, and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. The positive rake angle and small nose radius maintain precise dimensions and a smooth surface even at shallow depths of cut of around 0.1–0.5 mm. For longitudinal turning, start with cutting data in the middle of the range, then adjust the feed rate to the required surface roughness and workpiece clamping rigidity. For boring small holes, select a boring bar from the SCLCR or SCFCR series with a diameter suited to the required hole depth.
Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 20 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 3183 rpm. For stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 70–160 m/min and a constant feed rate to limit work hardening of the layer being cut and prevent built-up edge. Indexable inserts in grade H6310 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn, and the PVD coating increases cutting edge resistance to abrasive wear. Emulsion cooling stabilizes dimensions and extends cutting edge life during long finishing passes.
Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select a version with a cubic boron nitride (CBN) cutting edge. The small radius rε 0.2 mm also limits the depth of cut: this is a finishing insert, not a roughing insert.

Frequently asked questions about the CCMT 060202 insert
use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters
Two — the diamond has 2 corners of 80° each, and the positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle allows only one working side of the insert to be used. When one corner wears out, index the insert in the pocket to use the other without changing the holder.
Holders with a 06 diamond-shaped pocket (IC 6.35 mm): for external turning SCLCR/L (entering angle 95°), SCACR/L (90°) and SCMCN (50°) with shank cross sections of 8×8 and 10×10 mm; for internal turning, boring bars SCLCR/L and SCFCR/L from Ø6 to Ø16 mm.
Only in corner radius: 0.2 mm is a finishing version for low surface roughness, 0.4 mm is a general-purpose version, while 0.8 mm is suitable for heavier roughing passes. The other dimensions (IC 6.35 mm, thickness 2.38 mm) are identical, so all versions fit the same holders.
Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 70–160 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
