K15 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and design
single-sided 60° triangle without a hole or chip breaker
The TPGN 110308 turning insert is a single-sided, triangular indexable insert made of cemented carbide in grade K15, designed for turning nonferrous materials. Shape T, an equilateral triangle with a corner angle of 60°, provides easier access to the workpiece profile during longitudinal turning and facing. The positive geometry with a clearance angle of 11° (letter P) reduces cutting resistance and performs well in soft, ductile materials. The insert uses one side and provides three cutting corners. Type N denotes a design without a hole or chip breaker, secured with a top clamp.
Key features of the K15 cemented carbide insert
- Three cutting corners — the triangle with a 60° corner angle provides 3 cutting edges on one side of the insert, which can be indexed when dull without changing the holder.
- Cemented carbide grade K15 — for nonferrous materials: copper alloys, light alloys, heat-resistant materials, and plastics.
- Positive geometry (letter P, α 11°) — reduced cutting resistance and lower forces on slender workpieces prone to deflection.
- Tolerance class G, indicating a ground insert with tighter tolerances, provides repeatable cutting edge positioning in the holder pocket.
- The nose radius rε of 0.8 mm combines a satisfactory surface finish with cutting edge strength at moderate feed rates.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 11 mm, IC 6.35 mm (1/4″), thickness 3.18 mm — compatible with holders with a triangular pocket.
Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert
The TPGN 110308 insert (also written without a space as TPGN110308) is suitable for turning components made of copper alloys, aluminum-based light alloys, heat-resistant materials, and plastics. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for example, when turning an aluminum alloy at Vc = 300 m/min on a diameter D = 40 mm, the result is approximately 2387 rpm. The sharp, smooth cutting edge reduces built-up edge in ductile materials prone to adhering to the tool. The insert is offered in grade K15 as a replacement for the older TPUN type and is compatible with holders that secure the insert with a top clamp.
The positive rake angle and ground tolerance class G make the TPGN 110308 insert suitable for finishing and semi-finishing where a clean, smooth surface is essential. The low cutting forces of the positive insert are beneficial when turning thin-walled workpieces prone to vibration, where a negative insert would exert higher forces. Within the TPGN 1103 family, variants differ mainly in nose radius, allowing an insert to be selected for finishing or roughing without changing the holder pocket size. When turning copper and aluminum alloys, maintain a uniform feed rate and effective cooling to reduce material buildup on the cutting edge and achieve consistent surface quality. This cemented carbide indexable insert is an economical solution for series production of nonferrous components.
The TPGN 110308 insert in grade K15 is designed for nonferrous materials and plastics. For turning structural steel or stainless steel, select an insert in a grade suitable for groups ISO P or ISO M.

Frequently asked questions about the TPGN 110308 insert
insert design, materials, and clamping
Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive, single-sided geometry (type P, clearance angle of 11°) allows only one side of the insert to be used. Once a corner is dull, rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.
For nonferrous materials and plastics: copper alloys, aluminum-based light alloys, heat-resistant and high-temperature-strength materials, and plastics. For turning steel or stainless steel, select a grade suitable for ISO P or M groups.
Mainly in nose radius rε: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is a general-purpose option, while a larger radius is selected for roughing. The other dimensions in the family (IC 6.35 mm, thickness 3.18 mm) remain the same.
Type N denotes an insert without a hole or chip breaker. It is secured in the holder with a top clamp (with a clamping finger), rather than a central screw — therefore, select a turning tool with a triangular pocket designed for top-clamped inserts.
