Monoblock analog caliper – measurement without batteries or electronics

Instrument design and use in workshop conditions

Vernier caliper 150 mm in monoblock construction is a basic inspection instrument for workshops and toolrooms. Read the result from the main scale and the vernier — an additional scale with 0.02 mm graduations, the finest used in analog calipers. The instrument needs no battery or electronics, so it is ready for immediate use, even after years in storage.

Monoblock construction means that the beam and jaws are made from a single piece of stainless steel, without screw-fastened joints. The one-piece body maintains jaw geometry through years of intensive use. The matte guide does not reflect light, making it easier to find the coinciding graduation on the production floor. The clamping screw locks the slider, allowing you to transfer the measured dimension without the setting shifting.

The absence of electronics is a practical workshop advantage of a vernier caliper. Coolant, grinding dust, and the magnetic field of a grinder table do not harm it. The flat depth gauge is more rigid than a round rod and rests securely on the bottom of a groove. After use, simply wipe the beam and store the instrument in the supplied case.

How to measure with a 0.02 mm caliper – reading the vernier in three steps

Reading principle with a numerical example

A vernier with 0.02 mm graduations divides one millimeter of the main scale into 50 parts — 50 vernier marks span 49 mm of the scale. Taking a complete reading involves three steps:

1Whole millimetersRead the last main scale mark before the vernier's "0" mark
2Aligned markFind the single vernier mark that aligns perfectly with a main scale mark
3Measurement resultMultiply the number of this mark by 0.02 mm and add it to the whole millimeters

View the scale perpendicularly — reading at an angle causes parallax error

Diagram of a 0.02 mm vernier reading — zero past the 34 mark, result 34.24 mm

Illustrative diagram — 34.24 mm reading on a caliper with a 0.02 mm vernier

334 mm + 12 × 0.02 mm = 34.24 mm

The closely spaced 0.02 mm vernier requires a moment of attention to find the coinciding graduation, but its reading increment is 2.5 times finer than that of a caliper with a 0.05 mm vernier. Every 150mm vernier caliper is read in the same way — only the graduation spacing differs. With good lighting and a perpendicular viewing angle, the reading is unambiguous.

Measurement accuracy per DIN 862 – 0.02 mm vernier

Resolution, maximum permissible errors, and application range

The 0.02 mm graduation specifies reading resolution, not measurement accuracy. Accuracy is limited by DIN 862:2015 — for a range of 150 mm, the maximum permissible error for external measurement falls within ±0.02–0.03 mm and increases with measured length, while internal and depth measurements have a higher limit. In practice, technique also matters: a perpendicular viewing angle, moderate pressure, and clean measuring surfaces.

Vernier options in 150 mm workshop calipers

VernierScale constructionMaximum permissible error at 150 mmTypical application
0.05 mm20 divisions over 19 mmapprox. ±0.05 mmgeneral workshop tasks
0.02 mm This model50 divisions over 49 mm±0.02–0.03 mmquality control, fits

Maximum permissible error values are approximate — DIN 862:2015 specifies the limits for individual lengths and measurement types.

Caliper application limits

For tolerances below 0.05 mm, a caliper is no longer sufficient — use a micrometer. Measure at a temperature close to 20°C: steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm per meter per degree Celsius, so a workpiece that is 10°C warmer produces an error of approximately 17 µm over a length of 150 mm.

150mm vernier caliper with a 0.02 mm vernier and monoblock construction is a durable instrument for everyday dimensional inspection: diameters, holes, depths, and steps. The closely spaced vernier is suitable for checking fits and acceptance inspection of workpieces where 0.05 mm reading increments are too coarse. Without batteries or electronics, the instrument remains functional for years — it only requires a clean guide and periodic checking with gauge blocks.

Vernier caliper 150 mm – frequently asked questions

The 0.02 mm vernier has finer graduations and a lower maximum permissible error than the 0.05 mm version, making it suitable for checking fits, quality control, and workpiece acceptance inspection alongside typical workshop tasks. For tolerances below 0.05 mm, no caliper can replace a micrometer.

Read the whole millimeters on the main scale before the vernier's "0" mark, then find the single vernier mark that aligns with a main scale mark. Multiply its number by 0.02 mm and add it to the whole millimeters, e.g., 34 mm + 12 × 0.02 mm = 34.24 mm.

The beam and fixed jaws are made from a single piece of steel, without screw joints. This body is more rigid, does not lose calibration at joints, and maintains jaw parallelism throughout the instrument's service life.

Close the jaws to zero and check that the "0" marks on both scales align and no light is visible between the jaws. Every 6–12 months, compare readings against gauge blocks at several points across the range.
