16 ER AG60 BMA metric threading insert turns external threads with a 60° profile angle and pitches from 0.5 to 3.0 mm. One insert can cut metric coarse threads from M3 to M27, fine threads within this pitch range, and UNC and UNF inch threads from 48 to 8 threads per inch. It works in size 16 right-hand SER holders and, as an alternative, in left-hand SIL 16 boring bars. It has three corners: when an edge wears out, index the insert to the next corner.

How the 16 ER AG60 insert cuts threads – rotation, feed, and passes

Feed equal to the pitch and several progressively shallower passes

One spindle revolution – one thread pitch

The shaft rotates while the insert in the holder moves along its axis. For each spindle revolution, the feed is exactly one pitch, e.g., 2 mm for an M16 thread. In a typical setup, the right-hand insert feeds toward the chuck and cuts a right-hand thread.

The AG60 insert does not touch the thread crests. They retain the diameter turned before threading, so this dimension determines the finished thread.

Six successive passes of the 16 ER AG60 insert in an M16 thread groove, using flank infeed
Schematic illustration of passes for an M16 thread (2 mm pitch). Lines 1–6 show successive cutting edge positions.

Successive passes deepen the profile

A threading insert does not cut the thread in a single pass. It cuts deeper with each pass, while the thickness of material removed decreases from the first pass to the last. The final pass removes approx. 0.05–0.08 mm; a thinner layer causes the material to be compressed rather than cut.

Use flank infeed at an angle of 29–30° to the radial direction. The insert then cuts mainly on one flank, and the chip flows to one side. The narrow AG60 tip cuts deeper than the ISO thread root: for M16, approximately 1.44 mm instead of 1.23 mm. Stop the infeed when a thread ring gauge or nut fits onto the thread.

Cutting speed, spindle speed and number of passes

BMA is a submicron carbide grade with a PVD TiAlN coating. It machines steels, stainless steels and cast irons. The speeds in the table apply to thread turning with this insert.

Spindle speed and feed for M16

Thread pitch of 2 mm marked between the centers of adjacent profile crests
Pitch P is measured along the axis between corresponding points on adjacent thread turns.

For each spindle revolution, the insert advances by one pitch: fn = P = 2 mm/rev.

Example: M16 in low-alloy steel, vc = 100 m/min
n = 1000 × vc / (π × d) = 1000 × 100 / (π × 16) ≈ 1990 rpm
vf = n × P = 1990 × 2
3980 mm/min
feed rate
d – thread diameter (16 mm), n – spindle speed, vc – cutting speed from the middle of the range in the table, vf – feed rate.

M10 thread with a 1.5 mm pitch and the tip of the 16 ER AG60 insert
Pitch 1.5 mm – M10
M24 thread with a 3.0 mm pitch and the tip of the 16 ER AG60 insert with a 60° angle
Pitch 3.0 mm – M24
Three threads shown at the same scale. The same insert tip cuts each groove: angle 60°, radius 0.08 mm.

The universal 60° insert has a narrow tip with a radius of 0.08 mm. It fits both a thread groove with a pitch of 0.5 mm and one with a pitch of 3.0 mm. The lathe feed determines the pitch, while the infeed over successive passes determines the depth. This allows one insert to cover every pitch in this range.

ISO metric threads and UN unified inch threads have a 60° angle. The insert can therefore cut metric coarse threads from M3 to M27 and any fine thread with a pitch of 0.5–3 mm, e.g., M12 × 1.5 or M36 × 3. It also cuts UNC threads from #3-48 to 1"-8 and UNF threads from #4-48 to 1 1/2"-12. For short production runs, this replaces several full-profile inserts, each suited to a single pitch.

AG60 vs. a full-profile insert – how they differ

Thread crest, pitch range and root radius

This insert
Partial-profile insert in the thread groove, with machined flanks and root and unmachined crests

Partial profile 16 ER AG60

The insert machines the flanks and root of the groove over a pitch range of 0.5–3.0 mm. It does not touch the crests: they retain the previously turned diameter.

Choose for: short runs and various pitches.
Comparison
Full-profile insert in the thread groove, with machined flanks, root and crests

Full profile, e.g., 16 ER 1.5 ISO

The insert turns the flanks, root and crests of a thread with a 1.5 mm pitch. The crest is formed in the same cycle as the flanks, ensuring a repeatable profile in production runs.

Choose for: production runs of threads with a single pitch.
Feature16 ER AG60Full ISO profile
Pitch range0.5–3.0 mm, 48–8 threads per inchone pitch, e.g. 1.5 mm

Groove depth for M16approx. 1.44 mm, deeper than the ISO profile1.23 mm, matching the ISO profile
Inserts for pitches of 0.5–3.0 mm1one for each pitch

A full-profile insert finishes the thread, including the crests, making it easier to maintain a consistent profile in production runs. AG60 leaves the crests at the diameter you turn. Its narrow corner also produces a sharper thread root than the ISO profile at larger pitches.

Thread diameter and root with an AG60 insert

Before threading, turn the major diameter within tolerance class 6g, e.g., M16: 15.682–15.962 mm, M20: 19.623–19.958 mm. The corner radius of 0.08 mm produces a sharp thread root. PN-ISO 965-1 requires bolts of property class 8.8 and higher to have a root radius of at least 0.125 times the pitch, or 0.25 mm for M16. For these bolts, choose a full-profile insert for the specified pitch.

Dimensions of the 16 ER AG60 insert

The number 16 indicates the insert size: an edge length of 16 mm and an inscribed circle IC of 9.525 mm, or 3/8 inch. It is not the thread diameter. Dimensions X = 1.2 mm and Y = 1.7 mm specify the position of the cutting tip relative to the sides of the insert. The corner has an angle of 60° and a radius of 0.08 mm.

Mount the threading insert in right-hand external SER holders for size 16 inserts, e.g., SER 1616 H16, SER 2020 K16, or SER 2525 M16. The insert has the same shape as the left-hand internal 16 IL insert, so it can alternatively be mounted in a left-hand SIL 16 boring bar to cut an internal thread. Internal inserts are intended for regular internal threading. The standard shim tilts the insert by 1–1.5° to suit the thread helix angle. The shim only needs to be replaced for a large pitch on a small diameter.

The 16 ER AG60 BMA metric threading insert covers all pitches from 0.5 to 3.0 mm with a 60° angle in a single cutting edge. It is useful for short production runs of various metric and UN inch threads. It requires the diameter to be prepared beforehand, but eliminates the need for a separate insert for each pitch.

16 ER AG60 – questions about selection and applications

Key information before selecting an insert

You can cut external threads with a 60° angle and pitches from 0.5 to 3.0 mm. These include metric coarse threads from M3 to M27, fine threads with these pitches, e.g., M12 × 1.5 or M36 × 3, and UNC inch threads from #3-48 to 1"-8 and UNF threads from #4-48 to 1 1/2"-12.

Turn the major diameter to the thread dimension within tolerance class 6g, e.g., M10: 9.732–9.968 mm, M20: 19.623–19.958 mm. The insert cuts the flanks and root, while the crests remain at this diameter.

Right-hand external SER holders for size 16 inserts, e.g., SER 1616 H16, SER 2020 K16, SER 2525 M16, or SER 3232 P16. It has the same shape as the left-hand internal 16 IL insert, so it also fits left-hand SIL 16 boring bars as an alternative.

The number of passes increases with pitch: 3–6 for 0.5 mm, 5–11 for 1.5 mm and 8–17 for 3.0 mm. Start in the middle of the range and add passes for harder materials.

This is the insert size: an edge length of 16 mm and an inscribed circle diameter of 9.525 mm (3/8 inch). The thread diameter is determined by the shaft being machined, so the 16 ER AG60 insert can cut both M6 and M24.
