22 ER N60 metric threading insert cuts external threads with a 60° profile angle and a pitch from 3.5 to 5.0 mm. One insert can cut metric coarse threads from M30 to M52, metric fine threads within this pitch range and UNC inch threads from 7 to 5 threads per inch. It works in size 22 right-hand SER holders and, as an alternative, in left-hand SIL 22 boring bars. It has three corners: when a cutting edge wears out, index the insert to the next corner.

How the 22 ER N60 insert cuts threads – rotation, feed and passes

Feed equal to the pitch and several progressively shallower passes

One spindle revolution – one thread pitch

The shaft rotates while the insert in the holder moves along its axis. For each spindle revolution, the feed is exactly one pitch, e.g., 4 mm for an M36 thread. In a typical setup, the right-hand insert feeds toward the chuck and cuts a right-hand thread.

The N60 insert does not touch the thread crests. They retain the diameter turned before threading, so this dimension determines the finished thread.

Successive passes deepen the profile

A threading insert does not cut the thread in a single pass. It cuts deeper with each pass, while the thickness of material removed decreases from the first pass to the last. The final pass removes approx. 0.05–0.08 mm; a thinner layer causes the material to be compressed rather than cut.

Use flank infeed at 29–30° to the radial direction. The insert then cuts mainly on one flank, and the chip flows in one direction. The rounded N60 tip cuts deeper than the ISO thread root: for M36, approximately 2.50 mm instead of 2.45 mm. Stop the infeed when a thread ring gauge or nut screws onto the thread.

Cutting speed, spindle speed and number of passes

HTA grade is submicron carbide with a PVD TiAlN coating. It machines steels, stainless steels and cast irons. The speeds in the table apply to thread turning with this insert.

P Unalloyed steel, cast steel, free-cutting steel120–180
P Low-alloy steel and cast steel (up to 5% alloying elements)80–130

Spindle speed and feed for M36

Thread pitch of 4 mm marked between the centers of adjacent profile crests
Pitch P is measured along the axis between corresponding points on adjacent thread turns.

For each spindle revolution, the insert advances by one pitch: fn = P = 4 mm/rev.

Example: M36 in low-alloy steel, vc = 100 m/min
n = 1000 × vc / (π × d) = 1000 × 100 / (π × 36) ≈ 880 rpm
vf = n × P = 880 × 4

feed rate
d – thread diameter (36 mm), n – spindle speed, vc – cutting speed from the middle of the range in the table, vf – feed rate.

Pitch 5.0 mm – M48
Three threads shown at the same scale. The same insert tip cuts each groove: angle 60°, radius 0.53 mm.

The universal 60° insert has a rounded tip with a radius of 0.53 mm. It fits both a thread groove with a pitch of 3.5 mm and one with a pitch of 5.0 mm. The lathe feed determines the pitch, while the infeed over successive passes determines the depth. This allows one insert to cover every pitch in this range.

ISO metric threads and UN unified inch threads have a 60° angle. The insert can therefore cut metric coarse threads from M30 to M52 and any metric fine thread with a 3.5–5 mm pitch, such as M42 × 4 or M64 × 4. It can also cut UNC threads from 1 1/8"-7 to 1 1/2"-6. For short runs, this replaces several full-profile inserts, each of which fits a single pitch.

N60 vs. a full-profile insert – how they differ

Thread crest, pitch range and root radius

This insert
Partial-profile insert in the thread groove, with machined flanks and root and unmachined crests

Partial profile 22 ER N60

The insert machines the flanks and root of the groove over a pitch range of 3.5–5.0 mm. It does not touch the crests: they retain the previously turned diameter.

Choose for: short runs and various pitches.
Comparison
Full-profile insert in the thread groove, with machined flanks, root and crests

Full profile, e.g., 22 ER 4 ISO

The insert turns the flanks, root and crests of a thread with a 4 mm pitch. The crest is formed in the same cycle as the flanks, ensuring a repeatable profile in production runs.

Choose for: production runs of threads with a single pitch.

Inserts for pitches of 3.5–5.0 mm1one for each pitch

A full-profile insert finishes the thread, including the crests, making it easier to maintain a consistent profile throughout a production run. N60 leaves the crests at the diameter you turn. Its corner also produces a sharper thread root than the ISO profile at larger pitches.

Thread diameter and root with the N60 insert

Before threading, turn the outside diameter within the 6g tolerance zone, e.g., M36: 35.465–35.940 mm, M48: 47.399–47.929 mm. The corner radius of 0.53 mm produces a rounded thread root. PN-ISO 965-1 requires bolts of property class 8.8 and higher to have a root radius of at least 0.125 times the pitch, or 0.50 mm for M36. The corner meets this requirement up to a pitch of approximately 4.2 mm; for larger pitches on these bolts, select a full-profile insert for the specific pitch.

22 ER N60 insert dimensions

The number 22 indicates the insert size: an edge length of 22 mm and an inscribed circle IC of 12.7 mm, or 1/2 inch. It is not the thread diameter. Dimensions X = 1.7 mm and Y = 2.5 mm specify the position of the cutting tip relative to the sides of the insert. The corner has an angle of 60° and a radius of 0.53 mm.

Mount the threading insert in right-hand SER external holders for size 22 inserts, e.g., SER 2525 M22, SER 3232 P22, or SER 4040 R22. The insert has the same shape as the left-hand internal 22 IL insert, so it can alternatively be mounted in a left-hand SIL 22 boring bar to turn an internal thread. Internal inserts are intended for regular internal threading. The standard shim tilts the insert by 1–1.5° to accommodate the thread helix angle. The shim only needs to be replaced for a large pitch on a small diameter.

The 22 ER N60 metric threading insert covers all pitches from 3.5 to 5.0 mm with a 60° thread angle using a single cutting edge. It is useful for short production runs of various metric and UN inch threads. It requires a prepared diameter but eliminates the need for a separate insert for each pitch.

22 ER N60 – selection and application questions

Key information before selecting an insert

You can cut external threads with a 60° angle and pitches from 3.5 to 5.0 mm. These include metric coarse threads from M30 to M52, metric fine threads with these pitches, e.g., M42 × 4 or M64 × 4, and UNC inch threads from 1 1/8"-7 to 1 1/2"-6.

Turn the major diameter to the thread dimension within tolerance class 6g, e.g., M30: 29.522–29.947 mm, M48: 47.399–47.929 mm. The insert cuts the flanks and root, while the crests remain at this diameter.

Right-hand SER external holders for size 22 inserts, e.g., SER 2525 M22, SER 3232 P22, or SER 4040 R22. It has the same shape as the left-hand internal 22 IL insert, so it also fits left-hand SIL 22 boring bars as an alternative.

The number of passes increases with pitch: 9–19 for 3.5 mm, 10–20 for 4.0 mm and 11–21 for 5.0 mm. Start in the middle of the range and add passes for harder materials. Some values were interpolated from the manufacturer's table.

This is the insert size: an edge length of 22 mm and an inscribed circle of 12.7 mm (1/2 inch). The workpiece shaft determines the thread diameter, so the 22 ER N60 insert can turn both M30 and M52.
