MMWd caliper-type micrometer – construction and applications
Applications for an instrument with this measuring range
Inside micrometer 5-30 mm is an analog caliper-type instrument for measuring bore diameters, grooves, and recesses with a resolution of 0.01 mm. It works like a reversed outside micrometer: the measuring jaws expand inside the bore, and the result is read directly from the scale. The micrometer screw with a pitch of 0.5 mm provides 50 divisions of 0.01 mm per thimble revolution.
The ground cemented carbide measuring faces retain their geometry even under heavy use. The ratchet maintains a measuring force of 1-6 N, so the result does not depend on the operator's hand force. The locking screw holds the reading while it is read. The scale is located on the thimble and the corrosion-resistant chrome-plated sleeve. The range starts at 5 mm — the dimension of the closed measuring jaws.
Typical applications:
- measuring the diameters of bores, sleeves, and bearing seats in the 5-30 mm range,
- checking the width of grooves and recesses between workpiece surfaces,
- in-process inspection after drilling, reaming, and boring,
- quality control stations, toolrooms, and maintenance.
How to read the measurement
Sleeve and thimble scales step by step
The result consists of two readings. Whole and half millimeters are read on the sleeve — the whole-millimeter marks are above the reference line, and the 0.5 mm marks are below it. The sleeve numbering runs in the opposite direction to an outside micrometer because the dimension increases as the jaws expand. Hundredths of a millimeter are read on the thimble at the reference line. In the illustrated example, the thimble edge has covered the 17.5 mark, and the reference line indicates division 32, giving a result of 17.82 mm.
Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm per meter for a temperature change of 1°C. A bore with a diameter of 30 mm that is 10°C warmer than the instrument is approximately 0.003 mm larger, or one third of a scale division. For tolerances of a few hundredths of a millimeter, the workpiece and micrometer should be at the same temperature, preferably close to 20°C.
Find the maximum reading and do not force the ratchet
Measuring along a chord gives a reading that is too low — gently rock the instrument across the bore cross section; the correct diameter is the maximum reading in the plane perpendicular to the axis. Expand the jaws only with the ratchet until it starts to slip — excessive force distorts the result and accelerates wear of the measuring faces.
Set contents and zero setting
Preparing for the first measurement
INCLUDED:
| ✓ | adjusting wrench for sleeve adjustment during zero setting |
| ✓ | standard for checking the instrument's zero point |
Before measurement, check the instrument against the included standard: expand the jaws inside the standard using the ratchet and compare the reading with the dimension marked on the standard. Correct any deviation by rotating the sleeve with the adjusting wrench. Use the standard at a temperature close to 20°C.
The 5-30 mm inside micrometer combines a simple, reliable analog design with a resolution of 0.01 mm. Carbide measuring faces, constant ratchet force, and a locking screw ensure repeatable results over years of use. It is essential equipment for quality control stations wherever bore diameter measurement must be more reliable than with a caliper.
Frequently asked questions
The caliper-type instrument works like a reversed outside micrometer — the result is read directly from the scale starting at 5 mm, without setting it against a ring standard. Two-point and three-point bore micrometers self-center in the bore and can be more accurate, but an individual instrument covers a narrower range and requires calibration with a setting ring.
The internal dimension increases as the jaws expand, and the thimble rotates in the opposite direction to an external measurement. The sleeve values therefore decrease to the right, and the thimble edge covers successive marks as the dimension increases. The reading principle remains the same: millimeters from the sleeve plus hundredths from the thimble.
After use, clean the measuring faces and store the instrument in its case. Check the reading regularly against the included standard, and inspect the instrument after a fall or overload before returning it to service. Expand the jaws only with the ratchet — forcing the screw accelerates thread wear.
