They have the ability to cut with the side and face surfaces, hence they enable what is known as cylindrical-face machining. They are tools of the shank tool group, which have a monolithic shank with the working part. Due to the rather high price of carbide, tools of this type are made in small diameters from 1 mm to 20 mm (approximately every 1 mm) , of course, larger diameters are also available, but their price rises sharply out of proportion to the benefits of their work. Carbide cutters for steel are available in: 2-blade, 4-blade, 6-blade, 8-blade. The 2 and 4 blade cutters are designed for standard longitudinal milling, side milling, corner finishing, etc. On the other hand, 6- and 8-blade milling cutters are designed for finishing, when very high surface quality is required or the accuracy of the surface, for example, the side is to be very high.

With regard to the type of face of carbide milling cutters, we can distinguish straight, rounded and radial faces. Cutting parameters for VHM milling cutters for steel should normally be within the limits of Vc=100 [m/min] and feed per cutting edge fz=0.02-0.04 [mm/blade].
