MCSNR 20X20-12 turning tool – for longitudinal turning and facing
Professional indexable turning tool 20×20 mm for a CNMG insert
Turning tool MCSNR 20X20-12 is a professional turning tool designed for external turning on conventional and CNC lathes. The shank, with a cross section of 20×20 mm and a length of 125 mm, provides the rigidity required for industrial machining. The geometry with an entering angle of 45° allows simultaneous longitudinal turning and angled facing.
The combination clamping system (M) ensures maximum clamping rigidity and quick replacement of the CNMG 1204rr insert. The negative geometry of the 80° rhombic insert with 8 cutting edges is well suited to roughing and medium machining, providing high cutting edge strength and cost efficiency thanks to its double-sided design. The tool is compatible with CNMG 12 inserts in various carbide grades — select the grade to match the workpiece material.
Typical applications of the MCSNR 20X20-12 turning tool
Cutting operations:
| ▸ | Longitudinal turning with facing — the 45° angle allows simultaneous cutting along the axis and facing |
| ▸ | Roughing and medium machining — negative CNMG geometry provides maximum cutting edge strength |
| ▸ | Chamfering and external tapers — 45° angle ideal for 45° chamfers |
| ▸ | Turning steps and shoulders — machining cylindrical surfaces with changes in diameter |
| ▸ | CNC production runs — quick insert replacement and repeatable positioning |

Compatible CNMG 1204rr insert
CNMG 1204rr
The cutting insert is not included in the set — must be purchased separately. CNMG insert. Negative geometry means that the insert is double-sided and has 8 cutting edges, providing maximum cutting edge strength and cost efficiency.
Select the insert grade to match the workpiece material: P (structural steels), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), N (aluminum). You can find compatible inserts in the section "Related products" below.
Insert installation and replacement for the MCSNR 20X20-12 turning tool
Instructions for the combination clamping system (M)
Insert replacement procedure step by step
Loosen the clamping screw 2-3 turns
Remove chips and debris
Fit onto the pin and press down
Torque 1.5–2.5 Nm
Important: Do not exceed the recommended tightening torque — this may damage the thread in the seat or crack the insert.
Checks before starting work:
| ▸ | Tool overhang — do not exceed 1.5× the shank height without support |
| ▸ | Cutting edge height — set the cutting edge at spindle center height (±0.05 mm) |
| ▸ | Insert seat condition — check that the contact surface is not damaged or worn |
| ▸ | Secure clamping — the insert must have no play in the seat |
| ▸ | Indexing — when an edge wears out, rotate the insert to a fresh edge (8 edges in total) |
Note: Use coolant during machining — it extends insert life and improves surface finish. When machining without coolant, reduce the cutting parameters by 20–30%.
Frequently asked questions — MCSNR 20X20-12
This tool accepts inserts CNMG 1204rr in any carbide grade. Select the grade to match the workpiece material: P (steels), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), N (aluminum). You can find compatible inserts in the "Related products" section below.
The entering angle of 45° allows simultaneous longitudinal turning and facing at 45°. Ideal for machining chamfers, tapers, and transitions between diameters.
The CNMG insert has negative geometry (clearance angle 0°), which means that it is double-sided with 8 cutting edges. When one edge wears out, rotate or flip the insert to use the next edge — this significantly reduces tooling cost per part.
