Description

M3-M12 hand tap set — 21 pieces

M3–M12 hand tap set provides essential equipment for cutting internal threads in machine shops and maintenance departments. It includes three-piece tap sets in all common metric sizes. It ensures dimensional repeatability and maintains tolerances in accordance with ISO standards.

The set includes

▸ M3–M12 hand taps — 3-piece HSS sets with 6H tolerance (roughing + intermediate + finishing)

21 pieces

DIN 352 HSS hand taps

M3-M12 hand taps from this set are used for manually cutting internal threads. Each size includes three tools — roughing (No. 1), intermediate (No. 2), and finishing (No. 3) — so the thread is cut in stages without excessive stress on the material.

The cutting edges are made from high-speed steel (HSS) with a hardness of 64 HRC, enabling machining of structural steels with tensile strength up to 800 MPa. DIN 352 and a 6H tolerance ensure dimensional accuracy and proper fit with screws. Using three taps distributes the cutting forces across three stages — protecting the tool against breakage and producing a smooth thread profile. The square shank fits standard adjustable tap wrenches, and the straight flutes facilitate chip removal during manual operation.

Tap drill selection

Before tapping, drill a hole of the appropriate diameter. The table below shows the recommended drill diameters for the metric coarse threads included in the set.

M3 0.50 2.5
M4 0.70 3.3

M6 1.00 5.0
M8 1.25 6.8
M10 1.50 8.5
M12 1.75 10.2

Drill bits are not included in the set — they must be purchased separately.

Frequently asked questions

Start by drilling a hole with the correct drill bit — for an M8 thread, you need 6.8 mm. Drill at an angle of 90° to the surface. Fit the first tap (roughing tap) in the tap wrench and gently turn it into the hole. Work rhythmically: half a turn forward, a quarter turn back — the chips will break instead of jamming. Continue with the intermediate and finishing taps. Remember to lubricate with oil throughout the operation.

Try each leaf of the thread pitch gauge against the thread turns — external or inside a hole. The correct leaf fits precisely without gaps or play. The pitch value is stamped on the leaf — millimeters for metric threads, TPI for inch threads. The supplied 12-leaf gauge measures pitches from 0.5-1.75 mm.

External thread (screw, stud): Use a caliper to measure the major diameter across the thread crests — for example, 8 mm. Then select a gauge leaf that fits the grooves and record the pitch — for example, 1.25 mm. The thread is M8×1.25.

Internal thread (sleeve, nut): Open the inside jaws of a caliper to measure the hole from wall to wall. Add 1-1.5 mm to this measurement to obtain the nominal diameter. Determine the pitch by inserting the gauge leaves into the hole. Example: a 6.8 mm hole + a 1.25 mm pitch indicates an M8×1.25 thread.

The correct drill diameter is essential for a successful thread. Sizes for standard metric threads: M3 — 2.5 mm, M4 — 3.3 mm, M5 — 4.2 mm, M6 — 5.0 mm, M8 — 6.8 mm, M10 — 8.5 mm, M12 — 10.2 mm. A hole that is too small causes tool breakage; one that is too large produces a thread with reduced load capacity. Always check the selection chart before starting work.
