Description
M3-M12 hand tap set with tap wrench — 23 pieces
M3–M12 hand tap set provides a practical solution for workshops and service centers that regularly cut internal threads in steel and cast iron components. The set includes three-piece hand tap sets in the seven most common metric sizes, an adjustable tap wrench, and a gauge for quick thread pitch identification.
The set includes
| ▸ | M3–M12 hand taps — 3-piece HSS sets with 6H tolerance (roughing + intermediate + finishing) |
| ▸ | Tap wrench — No. 1.1/2, range M1–M12 |
| ▸ | Thread pitch gauge — 14-leaf, for metric and inch threads |
DIN 352 HSS hand taps
M3-M12 hand taps are made of high-speed steel (HSS) with a hardness of 64 HRC, allowing machining of structural steels up to 800 MPa. Each thread size includes three tools used in sequence: the taper tap cuts the initial profile, the plug tap deepens it, and the bottoming tap produces a smooth surface and accurate size.
This staged technique minimizes the risk of tool breakage and produces the correct thread geometry even during manual operation. The taps comply with DIN 352 with a 6H tolerance, ensuring proper fit with screws of medium accuracy class. The square shank fits directly into the No. 1.1/2 tap wrench included in the set.

14-leaf thread pitch gauge
Thread pitch gauge allows quick identification of metric thread pitch (in mm) and 55° Whitworth inch thread pitch (in TPI — threads per inch). Essential when selecting the correct tap for an existing thread or checking whether a thread has been cut correctly.
| Metric thread pitches | |
|---|---|
| 0.50 mm | 0.90 mm |
| 0.60 mm | 1.00 mm |
| 0.70 mm | 1.25 mm |
| 0.75 mm | 1.50 mm |
| 0.80 mm | 1.75 mm |
| 55° inch threads (Whitworth) | |
| 28 TPI | 27 TPI |
| 14 leaves | |

Tap drill selection
Before tapping, drill a hole of the appropriate diameter. The table below shows the recommended drill diameters for the metric coarse threads included in the set.
| Thread | Pitch P [mm] | Drill ∅ [mm] |
|---|---|---|
| M3 | 0.50 | 2.5 |
| M4 | 0.70 | 3.3 |
| M5 | 0.80 | 4.2 |
| M6 | 1.00 | 5.0 |
| M8 | 1.25 | 6.8 |
| M10 | 1.50 | 8.5 |
| M12 | 1.75 | 10.2 |
Drill bits are not included in the set — they must be purchased separately.
Frequently asked questions
First, drill the hole — use a 6.8 mm drill for M8. Drill perpendicular to the material surface. Secure the taper tap (No. 1) in the tap wrench and insert it into the drilled hole. Turn half a turn forward, then a quarter turn back — this prevents chip jamming. Then run tap No. 2 and No. 3 through the hole. Use tapping lubricant throughout the process.
Try the gauge leaves one by one against the internal or external thread profile. The matching leaf fits smoothly into the grooves without any gaps. Read the pitch marked on the leaf — in millimeters for metric threads or TPI for inch threads. The 12-leaf gauge included in the set covers pitches of 0.5-1.75 mm.
External thread (rod, screw): Place the caliper jaws across the thread crests and record the measurement — for example, 8 mm. Use a thread pitch gauge to find the leaf that fits the profile perfectly and read the pitch — for example, 1.25 mm. The thread is M8×1.25.
Internal thread (hole, nut): Measure the hole diameter with the inside jaws of a caliper. Add 1-1.5 mm to the reading to obtain the nominal thread diameter. Determine the pitch by inserting the gauge leaves into the hole. Example: a 6.8 mm hole + a 1.25 mm pitch gives an M8×1.25 thread.
Correct drill selection determines thread quality. Diameters for metric coarse threads: M3 — 2.5 mm, M4 — 3.3 mm, M5 — 4.2 mm, M6 — 5.0 mm, M8 — 6.8 mm, M10 — 8.5 mm, M12 — 10.2 mm. A hole that is too small risks tap breakage; one that is too large results in a weak thread. Always verify the dimensions in the chart before drilling.
