V-Coil 3xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M10x1.5 thread

The M10x1.5 V-Coil thread repair insert is a resilient coil made of Helicoil-type stainless steel wire. Installed in a hole tapped with a special thread repair tap, it creates a new, fully functional M10 thread for a standard bolt. Repairing a stripped thread does not require a larger bolt or replacement of the entire part. The 3xD version (30 mm) is the longest variant — for soft materials and heavily loaded joints. The insert complies with the standard DIN 8140 (form A — without bolt locking, free-running).

Practical installation checks

Before installation, clean chips and coolant residue out of the hole. Screw in the insert with an installation tool, keeping it straight and using no force. A properly seated insert sits 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the surface. Finally, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so that it does not obstruct the screw.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The insert wire has a diamond-shaped cross section, so it works on both sides simultaneously: the outer edge engages the thread in the hole, while the inner edge forms a new thread for the screw. Before installation, the coil is slightly larger than the hole. As it is screwed in, the coils compress; when the tool is released, they expand and lock permanently in place — without adhesive. The wire has a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa — the new thread is harder and smoother than a thread cut directly into the material.

Why a standard M10 tap will not work here

The insert wire has a thickness of approx. 0.98 mm (calculated from the thread pitch: 0.65 × 1.5 mm).

The hole must accommodate the thread and the wire on both sides, so its diameter is approx. 11.95 mm — approximately 2 mm larger than a standard M10 thread (10 mm).

This enlarged thread can only be cut with a thread repair tap M10 4H V-Coil, after drilling the hole Ø10.3 mm. Once the insert is screwed in, the screw again engages a standard thread M10 × 1.5.

Thread restoration in steel, cast iron, and aluminum – when to choose the 3xD version

Why the repaired thread holds more securely

The insert repairs threads in steel, cast iron, aluminum, magnesium, and plastics. The 3xD version is selected for soft materials and high-strength bolts (property class 8.8 and above); in steel, a shorter version is usually sufficient — a longer one also holds securely but requires a deeper hole. The stainless steel wire protects the joint against corrosion and withstands repeated disassembly. In a standard thread, the first thread carries half the force — it is the one that strips. The insert distributes the force evenly across all threads:

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

Check before purchasing

✓Nominal thread: M10 with a pitch of 1.5 mm.
✓Tap: special M10 4H V-Coil thread repair tap.
✓Tap drill hole: Ø10.3 mm drill bit.
▲Depth: space for an insert 30 mm high and proper seating.

Application limitations

A standard M10 × 1.5 tap cuts a thread that is too small — the insert will not hold in it. A V-Coil system thread repair tap is required. This insert also does not prevent the bolt from loosening (free-running version): under severe vibration, add threadlocker or choose a screw-locking insert (with bolt locking).

The M10 3xD V-Coil thread repair insert creates a joint in which the weakest point is the bolt, rather than the thread in the repaired part. Allow for the depth: 30 mm equals three thread diameters (3 × 10 mm) — this is the space the hole must provide. The same insert is also used to reinforce threads in series production.

Frequently asked questions

No. The insert is slightly larger than the tapped hole thread and wedges itself permanently in place after installation. Threadlocker is added only under severe vibration.

The top coil should sit 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the material surface. After installation, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so it does not obstruct the bolt.

No. The insert requires an STI thread (an oversized thread specifically for inserts) with a diameter of approximately 11.95 mm — a standard M10 thread is approx. 2 mm too small. The hole is drilled with a 10.3 mm drill bit and tapped with a V-Coil thread repair tap. Insert dimensions are specified by DIN 8140, so they also fit threads cut with Helicoil, Recoil, or BaerCoil tools.

Yes. Once the insert is installed, the hole again has a standard M10 × 1.5 thread. No special bolts or modifications are needed — the joint can be assembled and disassembled normally.
