V-Coil 2xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M20x2 thread

The V-Coil M20x2 thread repair insert is a Helicoil-type stainless steel wire coil that restores a damaged thread in a housing. Installed in a hole tapped with a thread repair tap, it creates a fully functional M20x2 thread for a standard screw. It does not require a larger screw or replacement of the entire part. The 2xD version, with a height of 40 mm, is suitable for materials of moderate strength. The insert conforms to DIN 8140, form A (free-running).

Practical installation checks

Before installation, clean chips and coolant residue out of the hole. Screw in the insert with an installation tool, keeping it straight and using no force. A properly seated insert sits 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the surface. Finally, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so that it does not obstruct the screw.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The insert wire has a diamond-shaped cross section, so it works on both sides simultaneously: the outer edge engages the thread in the hole, while the inner edge forms a new thread for the screw. Before installation, the coil is slightly larger than the hole. As it is screwed in, the coils compress; when the tool is released, they expand and lock permanently in place — without adhesive. The wire has a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa — the new thread is harder and smoother than a thread cut directly into the material.

Why a standard M20x2 tap will not work here

The insert wire has a thickness of approx. 1.3 mm (calculated from the thread pitch: 0.65 × 2 mm).

The thread for the insert must accommodate the wire on both sides of the profile, so its diameter is approx. 22.6 mm — approximately 2.6 mm larger than a standard M20x2 thread (20 mm).

This enlarged thread can only be cut with a thread repair tap M20x2 4H V-Coil, after drilling the hole Ø20.5 mm. Once the insert is screwed in, the screw again engages a standard thread M20 × 2.

M20x2 thread repair in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum

When to choose the 2xD version

The insert restores an M20x2 thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, as well as magnesium and plastics. The length is selected to suit the parent material and screw property class. The 2xD version, or 40 mm, is the standard solution for most tapped holes. A shorter insert is selected for shallow holes and hard steel. A longer one is used in soft material and with property class 8.8 screws and stronger. Applications include machine joints with fine threads M20x2, where vibration requires precise preload. The first thread carries approximately half the load, as shown in the load distribution table below.

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

Check before purchasing

✓Nominal thread: M20x2 with a pitch of 2 mm.
✓Tap: special M20x2 4H V-Coil thread repair tap.
✓Tap drill hole: Ø20.5 mm drill bit.
▲Depth: space for an insert 40 mm high and proper seating.

What to remember before repair

The insert requires an STI thread cut with a V-Coil system thread repair tap — a standard M20x2 tap cuts a smaller thread in which the insert will not seat. The free-running version does not lock the screw: use threadlocker or a screw-locking insert for joints exposed to vibration.

After installation of the V-Coil M20x2 2xD thread repair insert, the screw determines the joint's load limit, rather than the thread in the part. The hole must accommodate the 40 mm insert (2 × 20 mm) along with the proper recess below the surface. In addition to repairs, the insert is suitable for reinforcing threads during manufacturing.

Frequently asked questions

The length depends on the parent material and screw property class: the weaker the material and the stronger the screw, the longer the insert. The 1.5xD version is suitable for steel, cast iron, and shallow holes; 2xD is standard for aluminum; and 2.5–3xD is intended for soft materials and screws of property class 8.8 and higher. This insert is 2×D with a height of 40 mm.

No, because the coil is larger than the thread in the hole and locks permanently in place. Threadlocker is only useful under severe vibration. An alternative in such cases is a form B screw-locking insert according to DIN 8140.

Yes, insert dimensions are specified by DIN 8140 and ASME B18.29.1. Products from Helicoil, V-Coil, Recoil, and BaerCoil are therefore interchangeable. Matching size, pitch, and length matter, rather than the manufacturer.

Yes, the free-running version can be used with threadlocker or a self-locking nut. For severe vibration, form B screw-locking inserts are available according to DIN 8140. They have a polygonal coil that locks the screw.
