V-Coil 2xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M12x1.5 thread

The M12x1.5 V-Coil thread repair insert is a coil made of Helicoil-type stainless steel wire that restores a damaged thread. Installed in a hole tapped with a thread repair tap, it creates a fully functional M12x1.5 thread for a standard bolt. It does not require a larger bolt or replacement of the entire part. The 2xD version, 24 mm high, is selected for deeper threaded holes and higher loads. The design conforms to DIN 8140, form A, which is free-running.

Practical installation checks

Before installation, clean chips and coolant residue out of the hole. Screw in the insert with an installation tool, keeping it straight and using no force. A properly seated insert sits 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the surface. Finally, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so that it does not obstruct the screw.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The insert wire has a diamond-shaped cross section, so it works on both sides simultaneously: the outer edge engages the thread in the hole, while the inner edge forms a new thread for the screw. Before installation, the coil is slightly larger than the hole. As it is screwed in, the coils compress; when the tool is released, they expand and lock permanently in place — without adhesive. The wire has a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa — the new thread is harder and smoother than a thread cut directly into the material.

Why a standard M12x1.5 tap will not work here

The insert wire has a thickness of approx. 0.98 mm (calculated from the thread pitch: 0.65 × 1.5 mm).

The thread for the insert must accommodate the wire on both sides of the profile, so its diameter is approx. 13.95 mm — approximately 1.9 mm larger than a standard M12x1.5 thread (12 mm).

This enlarged thread can only be cut with a thread repair tap M12x1.5 4H V-Coil, after drilling the hole Ø12.5 mm. Once the insert is screwed in, the screw again engages a standard thread M12 × 1.5.

M12x1.5 thread repair in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum

When to choose the 2xD version

The insert restores threads in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, as well as magnesium and plastics. The length is selected according to the parent material and bolt property class. The version 2xD (24 mm) is suitable for typical threaded holes in aluminum. A shorter 1.5xD insert is selected for a shallow hole in steel. A longer 2.5–3xD insert is used in soft materials and with bolts of property class 8.8 and higher. The M12x1.5 thread is found in oil pan drain plugs, among other applications. Forces are distributed evenly because the first thread carries half the load.

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

Check before purchasing

✓Nominal thread: M12x1.5 with a pitch of 1.5 mm.
✓Tap: special M12x1.5 4H V-Coil thread repair tap.
✓Tap drill hole: Ø12.5 mm drill bit.
▲Depth: space for an insert 24 mm high and proper seating.

What to remember before repair

The insert requires an STI thread cut with a V-Coil system thread repair tap — a standard M12x1.5 tap cuts a smaller thread in which the insert will not seat. The free-running version does not lock the screw: use threadlocker or a screw-locking insert for joints exposed to vibration.

The M12x1.5 2xD V-Coil thread repair insert creates a joint in which the weakest point is the bolt, rather than the thread in the repaired part. Allow for the depth: 24 mm equals two thread diameters (2 × 12 mm) — this is the space the hole must provide. The same insert is also used to reinforce threads in series production.

Frequently asked questions

The length depends on the parent material and bolt property class: the weaker the material and the stronger the bolt, the longer the insert. The 1.5xD version is suitable for steel and cast iron; 2xD is standard for aluminum, while 2.5–3xD is for soft materials and bolts of property class 8.8. The insert shown has a length of 2xD (24 mm).

No, the coil is larger than the tapped hole thread and wedges itself permanently in place. Threadlocker is used only under severe vibration. An alternative in that case is a screw-locking insert conforming to DIN 8140 form B.

No, the insert requires an STI thread with a diameter of approximately 13.95 mm. A standard M12x1.5 thread is 12 mm, making it approximately 1.9 mm too small. The hole is drilled to Ø12.5 mm and tapped with an M12x1.5 4H V-Coil tap.

It is most commonly found in BMW oil pan drain plugs and engine sensor connections. It is also a common metric fine thread for mounting accessories in European cars. A pitch of 1.5 mm at a diameter of 12 mm produces a compact, shallow thread profile.
