V-Coil 2xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M16x2 thread

The M16x2 V-Coil thread repair insert restores a damaged or stripped hole, creating a fully functional M16 thread from Helicoil-type stainless steel wire. When installed in a hole tapped with a thread repair tap, it accepts a standard screw without requiring a larger screw or component replacement. Select the 2xD version with a height of 32 mm for soft materials and screws of a higher property class. The design complies with DIN 8140 form A, the free-running version.

Practical installation checks

Before installation, clean chips and coolant residue out of the hole. Screw in the insert with an installation tool, keeping it straight and using no force. A properly seated insert sits 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the surface. Finally, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so that it does not obstruct the screw.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The insert wire has a diamond-shaped cross section, so it works on both sides simultaneously: the outer edge engages the thread in the hole, while the inner edge forms a new thread for the screw. Before installation, the coil is slightly larger than the hole. As it is screwed in, the coils compress; when the tool is released, they expand and lock permanently in place — without adhesive. The wire has a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa — the new thread is harder and smoother than a thread cut directly into the material.

Why an STI tap is needed instead of a standard M16 tap

The wire thickness is determined by the thread pitch: 0.65 × 2 mm ≈ 1.3 mm.

The thread for the insert is enlarged to accommodate the wire on both sides of the profile — its diameter is approx. 18.6 mm compared with 16 mm for a standard M16 thread.

It can only be cut with a thread repair tap M16 4H V-Coil in a hole drilled to Ø16.5 mm; after the insert is installed, the hole returns to the nominal thread M16 × 2.

M16 thread repair in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum

When to choose the 2xD version

The same insert restores threads in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, as well as magnesium and plastics. Select the length according to the parent material and screw property class. The 2xD version is suitable for typical joints, including those in aluminum. Choose the shorter 1.5xD insert for a shallow hole in steel. Choose a longer insert for soft materials and screws of property class 8.8 and higher. The repaired thread carries loads in applications such as machine bodies and construction and agricultural machinery. The resilient wire distributes pressure across successive thread turns, and the first thread turn takes approximately half the force.

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

V-Coil system requirements

Installing the insert requires an STI thread, which can only be cut with an M16 4H V-Coil thread repair tap. The free-running insert allows the screw to be installed and removed freely; where severe vibration occurs, add threadlocker or select a screw-locking version.

After the V-Coil M16 2xD thread repair insert is installed, the screw determines the load limit of the joint, rather than the thread in the part. The hole must accommodate the 32 mm insert (2 × 16 mm), including the correct recess below the surface. In addition to repairs, the insert is suitable for reinforcing threads during manufacture.

Frequently asked questions

The length is selected according to the parent material and screw property class. For steel, cast iron, and shallow holes, 1.5xD is suitable; for aluminum, 2xD; and for soft materials and screws of property class 8.8+, the 2.5–3xD versions. This insert has a length of 2xD, or 32 mm.

The top coil of the insert is positioned 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn below the face surface. After installation, the installation tang is broken off with a punch. In a blind hole, the broken fragment must be removed before installing the screw.

No, the insert requires an STI thread with a diameter of approximately 18.6 mm. A standard M16 thread measures approximately 16 mm and is roughly 2.6 mm too small. The hole is drilled to Ø16.5 mm and tapped with an M16 4H V-Coil tap.

Yes, the free-running version can be used with threadlocker or a self-locking nut. Under severe vibration, screw-locking inserts are used in accordance with DIN 8140 form B. They have a polygonal coil that grips the screw and prevents it from loosening.
