The M6 thread repair kit is the most commonly used size in industrial maintenance — threaded holes M6x1.0 are found in machine covers, flanges and brackets. The kit restores the thread in place and retains the same bolt size, while the 15 stainless steel inserts provide enough for fifteen repairs.
Contents of the M6 thread repair kit
Four tools and a set of inserts in a case
The punch breaks off the tang, the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert engaged by the installation tool. After this step, the threaded hole is ready for use, and the tools return to the case for the next repair.

Nine millimeters of insert length and seven threads distribute the M6 bolt load over the full depth of the hole. This length suits steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum — the stainless steel insert also separates the bolt from the aluminum and reduces galvanic corrosion.
How the M6x1.0 thread insert works
Comparison of a directly tapped thread and a thread with an insert
| What changes in the threaded hole | Standard M6 thread | Thread for insert |
|---|---|---|
| Tap drill | 5.0 mm | 6.2 mm |
| Thread cut in the parent material | 6.0 mm | 7.3 mm |
| Tap | M6 | M6 STI |
| Bolt after repair | M6 | M6 |
The insert is a resilient coil wound to size from wire with a diamond-shaped cross section. The outer point of the diamond anchors in the enlarged thread in the hole, while the inner point restores the standard thread M6x1.0. The bolt itself, wrench and tightening torque remain unchanged.
A pitch of 1.0 mm gives a wire thickness of 0.65 × 1.0 = 0.65 mm. The wire fills the profile on both sides, so the thread in the parent material increases to 6 + 1.3 × 1.0 = 7.3 mm — exactly the diameter cut by the tap M6 STI. The hole for it measures 6.2 mm, rather than 5.0 mm as for a standard M6 thread.
The coil is held in place by spring force. In its free state, it measures 7.58–7.95 mm, larger than the thread in the hole; the tool compresses it during installation, after which the coils expand and lock into the material.
Installing an insert in an M6 hole – sequence of operations
Four steps from drilling to a finished threaded hole
M6 thread repair step by step
Diameter: Ø6.2 mm
Tap: M6 STI
With the installation tool, a quarter turn below the surface
Finished thread: M6x1.0
Tap with oil, reversing the tool after each full turn
Tapping a 7.3 mm thread produces long chips that tend to remain at the bottom of a blind hole. Blow out the hole with compressed air or flush it before screwing in the insert — a chip underneath the insert raises it above the surface and prevents the bolt from being fully tightened.
Tap with oil, reversing the tool after each turn. The M6 STI tap with a 6.3 mm square drive fits a workshop tap wrench without an adapter.
Before repair, check that the hole has not previously been enlarged beyond 6.2 mm. If it has, the drill bit in the kit will not remove material around the entire circumference, and the 7.3 mm thread will be incomplete. In this case, the remaining options are a larger insert or a threaded bushing bonded with resin.
M6 thread repair – customer questions
Selecting tools, drill bit and insert length
Frequently asked questions
In thread diameter. A standard M6 tap cuts a 6 mm thread, while the STI tap cuts 7.3 mm to accommodate the insert wire on both sides of the profile. Once the insert is installed, the hole accepts an M6 bolt again.
The Ø6.2 mm drill bit from the kit. A standard M6 thread requires a 5.0 mm drilled hole, so the hole is 1.2 mm larger — this allowance is usually sufficient to remove the remains of the stripped thread.
Yes. The HSS drill bit and tap work in cast iron dry or with minimal lubrication, and the 1.5xD insert is the standard length for cast iron and steel. Be sure to blow the dust out of the hole before installation.
Unscrew it with the tool and install a new one. The first coil should sit approximately a quarter turn below the surface — an insert installed too deep reduces the thread length available to the bolt.
Fifteen, which is the number of inserts included. The drill bit, tap, installation tool and punch are reusable, so further repairs only require additional M6x1.0 inserts.
