Kit with drill bit, STI tap, installation tool and 15 inserts
| KIT DATA | |
|---|---|
| Thread to be repaired | M10x1.5 |
| Inserts included | 15 pcs |
| Insert length | 1.5xD = 15.0 mm |
| Drill bit | Ø10.3 mm |
| Tap | STI M10x1.5 HSS-G |
| Insert material | stainless steel |
| Manufacturer | Varel |
| Product code | 0010620 |

The M10 thread repair kit restores the threaded hole M10x1.5 in heavily loaded joints: suspensions, frames and flanges. The repair retains the same bolt size, and the kit with 15 stainless steel 1.5xD inserts is sufficient for fifteen holes.
Contents of the M10 thread repair kit
Four tools and a set of inserts in a case
The drill bit, tap, installation tool and punch are reusable. Only the inserts are consumed, and these are purchased separately as M10x1.5 1.5xD inserts.

| Thread diameter B | 11.9 mm |
| Overall length L1 | 89 mm |
| Flute length | 29 mm |
| Square drive | 7.1 mm |
| Material | HSS-G (ground thread) |

| M10x1.5 1.5xD INSERT | |
|---|---|
| Restored thread | M10x1.5 |
| Thread pitch P | 1.5 mm |
| Height after installation | 15.0 mm (1.5xD) |
| Thread count | approximately 8.0 |
| Free-state outside diameter | 12.1–12.8 mm |
| Material | stainless steel |
| Installation version | with tang |
| Recommended drill bit | Ø10.3 mm |
| Thread direction | right-handed |
The insert with a height of 15 mm distributes the bolt load over eight threads in the hole. The standard 1.5xD length suits steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum; the stainless steel coil does not seize in the hole and withstands disassembly without losing its profile.
How the M10x1.5 thread insert works
Comparison of a directly tapped thread and a thread with an insert
| What changes in the threaded hole | Standard M10 thread | Thread for insert |
|---|---|---|
| Tap drill | 8.5 mm | 10.3 mm |
| Thread cut in the parent material | 10.0 mm | 11.95 mm |
| Tap | M10 | M10 STI |
| Bolt after repair | M10 | M10 |
The insert is a resilient coil made of wire with a diamond-shaped cross section. The outer edge anchors in the enlarged thread in the parent material, while the inner edge provides the bolt with a standard thread M10x1.5, so nothing changes in the joint documentation after the repair.
With a pitch of 1.5 mm, the wire measures 0.65 × 1.5 = 0.98 mm in thickness. It must fit on both sides of the profile, so the thread in the parent material increases to 10 + 1.3 × 1.5 = 11.95 mm. This is the diameter cut by the tap M10 STI with a 11.9 mm thread, guided in a hole 10.3 mm.
The insert holds without adhesive. In its free state, it measures 12.1–12.8 mm, so once the tool is released it expands against the thread in the hole and does not unscrew with the bolt.
Installing an insert in an M10 hole – sequence of operations
Four steps from drilling to a finished threaded hole
M10 thread repair step by step
Diameter: Ø10.3 mm
Tap: M10 STI
With the installation tool, a quarter turn below the surface
Finished thread: M10x1.5
Tap with oil, reversing the tool after each full turn
At this diameter, the drill bit can easily wander sideways, and an angled hole tilts the entire insert — the bolt head then no longer makes full contact with the surface. If you do not have a drill press, use a guide bushing or first start the hole with a center drill.
The M10 STI tap has an overall length of 89 mm and a flute length of 29 mm. At this diameter, tapping resistance is already substantial — use oil and reverse the tool after each turn.
Allow extra depth for a blind hole: 15 mm for the insert, approximately 3 mm for the incomplete threads left by the tap chamfer, plus the drill point cone, which is roughly 3 mm at a diameter of 10.3 mm. This gives a total of approximately 21 mm from the material surface.
M10 thread repair – customer questions
Selecting tools, drill bit and insert length
Frequently asked questions
No. A standard M10 tap cuts a 10 mm thread, while the insert requires 11.95 mm. The difference is twice the wire thickness, or 1.95 mm in diameter — without it, the insert has no thread to lock into.
The Ø10.3 mm drill bit from the kit. A standard M10 thread requires a 8.5 mm drilled hole, so the repair enlarges the hole by 1.8 mm and removes the remains of the stripped thread.
Align it perpendicular to the surface, check its position after the first two threads and reverse it after each full turn to break the chip. In a blind hole, remove chips before reaching the bottom — a jammed chip is a more frequent cause of breakage than cutting resistance alone.
Yes. The insert distributes thread contact pressure more evenly than a directly tapped thread, so the repaired hole often withstands more cycles than the original. This requires sound material around the hole and full installation depth.
Fifteen stainless steel 1.5xD inserts, enough for fifteen repairs. The tools remain available for further use.
