V-Coil 2xD Helicoil-type helical thread insert for repairing a damaged M10x1.25 thread

The V-Coil M10x1.25 thread repair insert is a Helicoil-type stainless steel wire coil that restores a stripped or worn internal thread. Installed in a hole tapped with a thread repair tap, it creates a fully functional M10x1.25 thread for a standard screw. It requires neither a larger screw nor replacement of the part. The 2xD version with a height of 20 mm is selected for deeper holes and softer materials. The design complies with DIN 8140 form A (free-running).

Practical installation checks

Before installation, clean chips and coolant residue out of the hole. Screw in the insert with an installation tool, keeping it straight and using no force. A properly seated insert sits 1/4–1/2 of a turn below the surface. Finally, break off the tang (the crosspiece at the bottom of the insert) with a punch; if the hole is blind, remove the broken piece so that it does not obstruct the screw.

Helicoil-type insert made from diamond-section wire – construction and operating principle

How the insert stays in the hole

The wire has a diamond-shaped cross section: one edge acts as a screw in relation to the hole, and the other as a nut in relation to the screw being installed. The free coil is slightly larger than the thread in the hole; as it is screwed in, it contracts elastically, then expands upon release and locks permanently in place without adhesive or additional components. Cold-rolled wire with a minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa produces a thread that is harder and smoother than one cut directly into the material.

Why a standard M10x1.25 tap will not work here

The insert wire has a thickness of approx. 0.81 mm (calculated from the thread pitch: 0.65 × 1.25 mm).

The thread for the insert must accommodate the wire on both sides of the profile, so its diameter is approx. 11.62 mm — approximately 1.6 mm larger than a standard M10x1.25 thread (10 mm).

This enlarged thread can only be cut with a thread repair tap M10x1.25 4H V-Coil, after drilling the hole Ø10.3 mm. Once the insert is screwed in, the screw again engages a standard thread M10 × 1.25.

When to choose the 2xD version

The insert restores an M10x1.25 thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum, as well as magnesium and plastics. The 2xD (20 mm) version is standard for aluminum and average loads. A shorter insert is sufficient in shallow holes and hard steel, while soft material with screws of property class 8.8 and higher requires a longer version. The M10x1.25 size is used, for example, in fine-thread engine bolts and accessory mounts. The hard wire distributes pressure evenly, so the first thread turn carries approximately half the force.

Thread strength: how much load each turn carries

Thread turnStandard thread (without an insert)Thread with a V-Coil insert
1 (first from the screw head)50%30%
225%22%
312%17%
46%13%
53%10%
62%8%

How to read the table: when the screw is tightened, each thread turn carries part of its load. In a standard thread, the first turn carries as much as 50% of the load — and it strips first. With an insert, the same turn carries only 30% because the load is distributed over the entire thread length. Catalog data from wire thread insert manufacturers.

Application limitations

The thread for the insert must be cut with an M10x1.25 4H V-Coil STI tap — the nominal M10x1.25 thread is too small for the insert to anchor in it. The free-running version does not prevent the screw from loosening: threadlocker or a screw-locking insert helps under vibration.

After installation of the V-Coil M10x1.25 2xD thread repair insert, the screw determines the joint's load limit, rather than the thread in the part. The hole must accommodate the 20 mm insert (2 × 10 mm) along with the proper recess below the surface. In addition to repairs, the insert is suitable for reinforcing threads during manufacturing.

Frequently asked questions

Select the length according to the parent material and screw property class: the weaker the material and the stronger the screw, the longer the insert. For steel, cast iron, and shallow holes, 1.5xD is sufficient; 2xD is standard in aluminum, while soft materials with screws of property class 8.8 and higher require 2.5–3xD. This model is 2xD (20 mm).

No. The coil is larger than the tapped hole and locks itself permanently in place, so it stays in place without additional products. Threadlocker is used only under severe vibration; a DIN 8140 form B screw-locking insert is an alternative.

No, because the insert requires an STI thread with a diameter of approximately 11.62 mm. A standard M10x1.25 thread is only 10 mm in diameter, making it approximately 1.6 mm too small. Drill the hole to Ø10.3 mm and tap it with an M10x1.25 4H V-Coil tap.

Yes. Threaded holes for spark plugs and fittings that are repeatedly removed are a typical insert application, because the hard wire with a minimum tensile strength Rm of 1400 MPa withstands repeated assembly without thread wear. The stainless steel also reduces galvanic corrosion in the aluminum cylinder head.
