How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M18x0.75 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 14 mm, square size 11 mm.

M18x0.75 left-hand DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 0.75 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M18x0.75 thread.

M18x0.75 left-hand machine tap for metric fine threads – HSSE for precision engineering

The M18x0.75 left-hand fine-thread machine tap is a specialized tool for cutting internal left-hand threads with an extremely fine pitch of 0.75 mm in diameter M18 for precision applications. Made of HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt, it guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimum tool life when machining difficult-to-machine materials requiring the highest precision. The M18x0.75 left-hand fine thread combines the advantages of a left-hand thread with the highest positional adjustment precision and excellent resistance to self-loosening. The tool is intended for professional toolrooms handling special orders in optics and precision engineering.

Technical specifications of the M18x0.75 left-hand machine tap

  • Left-hand thread direction (LH) used in components rotating clockwise where a right-hand thread could loosen on its own under torque
  • Fine thread with a 0.75 mm pitch provides extreme positional adjustment precision — one full turn produces a displacement of just 0.75 mm while maintaining high strength
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C required when machining alloy steels and difficult-to-machine materials
  • The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 374 ensures thread accuracy and full interchangeability with left-hand fasteners used in precision engineering
  • Compatibility with ER25 collet chucks and reversible tapping heads for cutting left-hand threads on CNC centers
  • The recommended tap drill diameter of 17.2 mm for the M18x0.75 left-hand fine thread ensures optimum thread engagement with minimal load

The M18x0.75 left-hand machine tap is used in industrial optics, photographic lenses, precision adjustment mechanisms, and wherever a combination of a left-hand thread and extreme precision is required. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 6-8% is recommended to maintain optimum tool life.
