Concave corner rounding cutter R1.5 mm type NFRk from Varel is a form tool for milling quarter-round profiles in accordance with the standard DIN 6518. Made of high-speed steel HSS (High Speed Steel, hardness 64 HRC), designed for machining concave radii on workpiece edges. The cutter has 4 cutting edges and a Weldon straight shank Ø10 mm, providing rigid clamping in the milling tool holder without the risk of rotation.

The HSS concave corner rounding cutter R1.5 mm is used wherever precise rounding of a workpiece edge to a constant radius is required. Typical applications include profile milling on injection molds, stamping dies, decorative components and machine parts requiring radii that conform to engineering drawings. The tool operates with its axis perpendicular to the edge being machined — the cutter's concave profile produces a convex radius on the workpiece.

Machining tip
For profile milling with a corner rounding cutter, use down milling (climb milling) for a better surface finish. For soft materials (Al, Cu), use higher cutting speeds and lower feed per tooth to avoid built-up edge (BUE).

The HSS DIN 6518 corner rounding cutter R1.5 mm is designed for machining structural steels (groups 1.1–1.8), austenitic and martensitic stainless steels (2.1–2.3), gray and ductile cast iron (3.1–3.5), copper, brass and bronze (6.1–6.4), aluminum and Al alloys (7.1–7.4), and plastics (8.1–8.3). It is not recommended for hardened steels above 45 HRC.
A concave quarter-round cutter (type NFRk) produces a convex radius on the workpiece edge — it leaves a quarter-round profile with a radius of R1.5 mm. A convex cutter (type NFRx), in contrast, cuts a concave groove in the material. Both types are standardized according to DIN 6518.
For a cutter with a Ø10 mm Weldon shank, the optimal solution is a collet chuck ER32 (clamping range 2–20 mm) with an ER collet matching the shank diameter. ER collet chucks provide concentric clamping with radial runout below 0.01 mm, resulting in a better surface finish during profile milling. The ER collet distributes clamping force evenly around the entire shank circumference, eliminating the risk of tool deformation.
