3-in-1 tool – drilling, tapping, and edge deburring
Design, hex shank, and applications
M10 Hex combination drill tap combines a 8.5 mm drill, an M10 tap, and a deburring chamfer in a single body made from ground HSS-G high-speed steel. The drilling section produces the hole, the tapping section cuts an M10 x1.5 thread to tolerance 6H, and the tapered transition removes the burr from the entry edge – the exit-side burr remains. The tool has a split point, so it centers itself and does not require center punching.
1/4-inch hex shank – combination drill tap for a cordless drill
The shank measures 6.35 mm and has a profile in accordance with DIN 3126, the same as screwdriver bits. The tool fits directly into a cordless drill's quick-release holder, a magnetic bit holder, or a bit extension. The drill must have reverse rotation – after cutting the thread, the tool is backed out in reverse. With an overall length of 59 mm, the body is short and rigid, limiting runout during handheld operation. However, the hex shank has slight play in the socket, so tool alignment must be maintained by hand.
- Three operations with one tool – a 8.5 mm hole, an M10 thread, and a chamfered edge without changing tools in the drill
- 1/4-inch shank in accordance with DIN 3126 – fits cordless drills, extensions, and magnetic holders
- Split point cutting tip – the tool centers itself; no center punch or center drill is needed
- Thread to tolerance 6H – an M10 screw threads in without reworking with a tap
- HSS-G steel ground after hardening – a more accurate thread profile than with rolled tools
- Material range: structural steels up to 800 N/mm², cast iron, aluminum, and brass
Where the M10 combination drill tap is used
The tool is used in service and maintenance work: adding a thread to a steel structure, mounting accessories on a machine frame, and repairing brackets. It works exclusively in through holes in material from 3 to 10 mm thick. Below 3 mm, the M10 thread has fewer than two load-bearing turns and can hold a guard or a cable, but not a structural joint – full load capacity requires a 10 mm wall. The tool is not resharpened in the workshop: once the drilling or tapping section becomes dull, its service life ends.
Operating parameters – rotational speed, cooling, and material selection
Cutting speeds for steel, cast iron, and nonferrous metals
Tapping is a low-speed operation. For steel, use a cutting speed of 6 m/min and convert it to rotational speed using the formula n = 1000 x vc / (3.14 x D): n = 1000 x 6 / (3.14 x 10) = approximately 190 rpm, which means the drill's first gear. Lubricate with tapping paste containing EP additives – at low speeds, it adheres to the tool better than oil.
| Workpiece material | vc [m/min] | n [rpm] | Lubrication |
|---|---|---|---|
| P Structural steel up to 800 N/mm² | 5-8 | 160-250 | EP tapping paste |
| M Austenitic stainless steel | 5 | up to 160 | EP paste, occasional use |
| K Gray cast iron | 8-12 | 250-380 | dry, air blast for chip removal |
| N Aluminum, brass | 15-20 | 480-640 | kerosene or oil, dry for brass |

Operating procedure and tool limitations
Operation step by step
Split point: without a center punch
Hole: 8.5 mm
Rotational speed: 190 rpm
Tolerance: 6H
Parameters for structural steel up to 800 N/mm² with tapping oil lubrication
The tool is intended exclusively for through holes in material 3-10 mm – in a blind hole, the thread ends before the bottom. Do not use hammer mode or work in steels hardened above 45 HRC. Work without gloves: a ribbon chip wraps around the shank and can pull your hand in.
Customer questions about the M10 combination drill tap
Selection, tap drill hole, and operating parameters
Frequently asked questions
No. The tool drills a 8.5 mm hole itself, exactly the size required for the M10 x1.5 thread (rule: nominal diameter minus pitch). Center punching is also unnecessary – the split point centers on the surface without wandering.
In steel, 160-250 rpm, which means first gear. Higher speeds overheat the cutting edges and risk twisting off the tapping section. Aluminum and brass can handle 480-640 rpm. Hammer mode must be switched off.
Structural steels up to 800 N/mm², gray cast iron, aluminum, and brass. Austenitic stainless steel only occasionally, at 5 m/min with EP paste – it work-hardens under the cutting edge. Steels hardened above 45 HRC are beyond the capabilities of HSS-G.
The M10 Hex combination drill tap made of HSS-G steel produces a 8.5 mm hole, an M10 x1.5 thread and an entry chamfer in a single operation. The 1/4-inch hex shank fits the quick-release holder of a cordless drill. At 190 rpm with EP paste, the tool maintains the thread profile throughout the operating cycle.
